Sony just spent the better part of the past few years lighting billion on fire chasing the live service trend, in the process delivering the single most expensive entertainment blunder in the past 100 years, Spider-Man 2 barely broke even, TLOU2 killed the franchise and likely Naughty Dog, and God of War: Foid Edition is bound to be a financial disaster.

I'm not sure where you're getting this notion that Sony's gaming division is profitable.
Playstation is like Valve and Apple, they don't sell software, and they don't sell hardware, they sell licenses. Every time a copy of CoD or GTA for Playstation sells, Playstation gets a cut of the proceeds because you can't put a game on Playstation without buying a license. First-party games are important for the health of the brand, but they are not necessary for profit.

Best case scenario, it's just going to lead to another fucking generation that doesn't get going until the end because every god damn thing will need to be cross platform with PS5 to make any god damn money anyways.
Considering we're still seeing shit being released for the PS4, we might have a first and be getting releases on 3 console generations at once, assuming Sony doesn't do the stupid and sunset PS4's Store.

Between diminishing returns on what hardware can do while still being affordable, the fact they keep cranking the price up when by now a base PS5 should be maybe half of what it was on release, and the billions spent chasing the Live Service dragon just in time for everyone to get fucking sick of Live Services, Sony has turned what should have been a locked in console generation (Xbox kinda fucked off into the woods, Nintendo does Nintendo things and doesn't care) into a generational fumble. No one needs a goddamn PS6 - they could barely move PS5's, even with GTA6 the fucking things are likely still rotting in warehouses.

They've unironically priced out the people most likely to buy Consoles, and I find it amusing that non-AAA developers realize if they don't want financial bombs, they need to make things for the previous gen. This would never happen last generation, though how much of that is the PS4's market dominance and how much is the PS3's architecture being a complete pain in the fucking ass is beyond me...

I want to live long enough to see SIE go bankrupt and their entire executive staff be forced to commit seppuku live on YouTube.

Only way I can see the PS6 being somewhat successful is if Sony figures out native PS3 emulation. Wait, then it may be more expensive down the line.

I don't believe it's the first time, cause I want to say that in the 90s at one point Sega was supporting the Master System, The Genesis, and the Saturn all at the same time during the Saturn's early lifespan and there was all of the peripherals that were released for the Genesis that they were still supporting like the Sega CD and the 32X. Definitely turned out very well for Sega as we all saw.
