There are at least 20 very good Megaman games just in the sidescrolling series. Much as I would like a retro style MMX9, as a Megaman fan, I have plenty of games to play if I want some Megamen.

I know it's very hard to try and keep any semblance of feel good with a nogamestation 5, but don't drag everyone else into the vortex.
I'd say Mega Man is a surprisingly consistent brand in that for most of it's spinoffs, there is always something that's at least worth looking into. Mega Man 2 and 3 are the peak of the Nes era, but if you want more, all of the other ones will give you a scratch. Mega Man X feels like a dream once you have the dash boost. Mega Man Zero series is kind of all over the place but I don't regret playing them. Mega Man Legends I never liked but others swear by it. Mega Man Battle Network I played through a good chunk of the first one till I lost focus (the net world dungeons were a chore) but I can certainly see how it managed to get 6 entries and I think that covers most of the brand.
The first one is rough, going back. It's mainly the dungeon structure, it's too maze-like. However, with a guide that's largely alleviated and considerably improves the pacing. Later games refined things but the first has a simple charm, though I'm biased due to nostalgia.
I'd say an even better run than Sonic, who ranks pretty highly in that regard too, due to having more consistently good games despite less output.
If you’re talking about Megaman X Dive, they recently released a fully offline, gacha-free PC port. Though I’ve heard that unlocking stuff is still a pain.
