Sony buying Epic Games seems extremely unlikely. Fortnite is already making bank by itself. Remember that Sony gave Epic a hard time with crossplay.

OTOH, Sony has invested $450 million in Epic Games' stakes, and $1 billion into helping them develop a metaverse for kids.

Here's the thing, first impressions are important. For many, they heard what MS's requirements were, balked, then went and ordered a PS4 and called it a day. If they did find out MS backtracked, it was after the purchase, and once the sony steamroller started, well, why buy into a platform that was being outsold 20:1?

There was also the lingering "what if?". What if MS backtracks on the backtrack and reimplements these systems?

Which they did with their new console. You need an internet connection to be able to register BC games and there are videos of people not being able to play their games without internet.

They'd already backtracked on both windows phone's support on multiple platforms but ALSO on the rumored enforcement of requiring new windows software to be via METRO apps instead of X86 (remember that fiasco?). There was 0 guarantee that MS wouldnt just enforce the internet connection later.

I feel MS was ahead of the curve with their initial Xbox One reveal.

Their major flops were focusing on TV, sports, multimedia and NOT on video games. Their Kinect was vastly improved, but the motion control gimmick died out after a couple years. Not to mention the high price point and weaker power TO run Kinect.

Game Pass and the Xbox Series S now is what MS was pitching before, but now streamlined.

Oh, I wasn't saying they would (they'd have to buy out Tencent's stake among other things) but he wanted a third party game bigger than CoD and I gave him one.

Anyways, thinking about it more, if Square's crypto pivot tanks, which seems quite possible, they would be a nice target for Sony. Multiple popular mobile/GaS games, studios capable of both triple A releases and successful remasters/remakes, no poison-pill arcade or gambling division to liquidate (just JP comics, which could probably be merged with existing Sony assets,) two really big"name" game series that support lots of releases and can hit over five million in sales regularly, very few "don't pull their weight" studios after restructuring and sale of old Eidos assets. Only issue I see is the old FF team (who are making FFVII Remake Part 2 currently, I think) still have problems getting games out the door in a timely manner-California could and should hate that.

Anyways, anyone hoping for the acquisition of any of the huge legacy JP studios is barking up the wrong tree. None of the console makers care about buying legacy IP, they have more of that than they know what to do with already,

And yet Microsoft is spending billions to buy Bethesda and Activision, and there are consistent rumors of Sony buying companies like SquareEnix. If they just wanted studios, there are plenty of indie studios they could buy to increase their development capacity if that was their only interest. No need for the billions. Clearly, they do in fact want the legacy IP.

Actually, that's not true. SquareEnix has a large arcade division that runs arcades all over Japan. Its called Taito.

Speaking of Sony buyout rumors, Eidos Montreal's founder has confirmed that he too has heard rumors that Sony is interested in buying Square Enix Tokyo. To quote him from the article directly:

And there are rumours, obviously, that with all these activities of mergers and acquisitions, that Sony would really like to have Square Enix within their wheelhouse. For the longest time, managing arcades was all Taito ever did. The current Taito is effectively not the original company. Its basically the third company to carry that name under SquareEnix, and its basically Squeenix's arcade division, ES1 Corporation, using the Taito name. The original home video game production unit of Taito was separated from Taito as Taito Soft, then folded into SquareEnix itself. They announced in 2018 that Taito was getting back into console games and have supposedly reinvested in game development, but nothing's really came of that, and with these fire sale rumors, Taito's future is probably up in the air.

Calling them fire sales is more than a bit of a stretch. Activision Blizzard's stock price was hit by the scandal, but the company was still (and is still) one of the most valuable companies in video games. Bethesda were cashing out because their stockowners were getting older and willing to cash out (Donald Trump's brother was actually one of the stock owners, and he passed away prior to the deal going through). But they weren't fire sales by any stretch.

Even though Activision only makes CoD now, it is CALL OF DUTY that we are talking about, one of the most successful video game franchises, no, MEDIA FRANCHISES, ever. King Digital is a very successful mobile company, and despite Blizzard's long, hard fall from grace, there is still value locking Warcraft, Starcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo. And that's on top of all the other franchises Microsoft would get, like Crash, Spyro, Guitar Hero, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.

Considering that most of their first party catalogue is still being released on the PS4 (although after God of War this year that trend might finally be ending), if they did something like it wouldn't have been an entirely bad idea, might have been a bit hard to sell to you're average ill-informed consoomer, but if they marketed it properly they could have made a fairly big profit with something like that, maybe.

I don't think they had to release the PS5 at the point in time they did, they probably could have waited a year or so, although I'm not sure what impact the pandemic would have had in that scenario if they had to wait a while with that spanner in the works, as things may have needed to be pushed back further to have a substantial release.

To add a note, the Nintendo Switch release of Densha de Go! Hashirou Yamanote is the sole version of the game that has the handle controller with full support, the PS4 version literally got nothing. The Switch version was the highest-selling in Japan in spite of being a trimester late too.

I played 5 and didn't notice anything unusual about it, it seemed fine and making it semi-open world was kind of fun.

The one thing I spoiled and would love to see a percentage of is the fact that at the end you must choose between a white and a black dudes survival. And the white guy is marcus fenix's son.

I played 5 and didn't notice anything unusual about it, it seemed fine and making it semi-open world was kind of fun.

I still personally find GoW forgettable. It's one of those franchises that exists... and that's it.
