This is more of a sin when they do this in 2D games. I don't get the people that are like "waaaaaaah 4:3 you can't see where you're going" and the only things that immediately come to mind are "Skill Issue"' and "git gud".
You can only complain about this if you're talking about Master System games ported to Game Gear because yes, those are a visual downgrade because the pov was shrunken on purpose to fit in that tiny-ass screen. Otherwise it would be a "are these games made for ants???" situation.
The move away from SA's "play whichever arc you want" to "you must now play this gamestyle to progress" was a huge regression for me, so I'll never prefer SA2.
In practice, when you're going at high speed, you need to know where you're going anyhow. One of the big flaws of Sonic the 2D platformer is that a "fast" main character doesn't combine well with the restricted viewport of 2D consoles. I beat Sonic 1 GG on original hardware back in the day, and realistically, the limited viewport wasn't anywhere as big a deal as a lot of folks make it out to be. You need to know the level layout, same as in the 16-bit versions.
I don't blame you. I probably only enjoy Sonic because of nostalgia. Practically, as games, all they had going for them was polish. The transition to 3D stripped a bunch of the polish away and all we were left with is that early-era 3D jank, made worse because Sega didn't even manage a proper 3D Sonic release for a whole hardware generation.I'll admit i'm one of those people, that's why skipped the classic titles and went straight to the 3D games, starting with Sonic Adventure. The good news is, if you have the Steam version, you can straight up mod the game to fix 99% of the issues to get the game looking more-or-less how it was supposed to be.
I certainly would. Fixing some of Adventure DX's key problems is as easy as downloading the SADX mod installer. To be honest, if you've gotten decently far into SA2 Battle I wouldn't bother starting over, there are some lighting and audio mixing issues with the GameCube version that the Dreamcast or modded PC versions don't have but I wouldn't consider them egregious enough to make you start the game over unlike with SADX. If anything, I believe the enhanced multiplayer and Chao Garden alone makes SA2 Battle a better way to experience the game than the original version. I would rather have remasters that fix all the bugs and janck. I want today's kids to enjoy these games in the best condition possible, not the bastardized GC ports. BlazeHedgehog has a good video about the mods one should have for the Steam version for SA2. It's a little out of date since someone made a mod to fix the broken stick sensitivity.Yes. Here's a few I recommend.
-ESSENTIAL-
Cutscene Revamp. Seems to be obsoleted by Speeps by a newer mod that I haven't used yet, but Cutscene Revamp does a lot to help bring the cutscenes closer to the original, as the post-DC ports of SA2 also have their fair share of graphical fuck-ups.
Dreamcast Characters. Allows you to take the slightly lower-poly DC character models, or even change Sonic's shoes from the SOAP Shoes into his OG footwear if that's what you want.
-OPTIONAL-
Full Story. Personally, I find it a lot more fun to play through the whole story instead of having them by split apart in a weird fashion. Definitely a fun mod, but it comes with its fair share of issues, so use at your own discretion.
Hedgepanel. A collection of Quality of Life improvements to the base game that you can optionally tweak on or off. Being able to use a somersault without it completely killing your momentum is something you don't realize you're missing until you try it.
HD GUI. Just a nice-to-have to make the HUD elements look sharper.
Additionally, the Mod Loader for SA2 has a couple of improvements filed under "Codes" that I tick on, namely "Disable Omochao" so that he never shows up during the level, and "All emeralds trackable in treasure hunt stages," because I hate how they nerfed the radar to pad out the search.
