Jesus Christ, these memes ...

On another note, it is quite nice that the director addressed the internet shitstorm in a very respectful and professional manner. That actually makes me want to see the movie SLIGHTLY more than previously? Still not going to see it, but you know ... The gesture is nice.

Disney should take some notes.

He's a coward.

Well, I dunno how anyone in the movie and games business hasn't learned this yet but...get your shit right the first time. Don't half-ass it or say you'll fix it later, cause you cost yourself time and money and worse, the customers' patience and trust. Seriously, most people are fine with waiting longer so shit comes out finished the first time, what makes you think they're gonna want to come back later to see if a disaster is a slightly less disaster?

It's all PR, the movie is not going to change.

It's Hollywood, they do one trillion test screenings before releasing any movie, they knew the film looked like horseass but went with it anyway because you simply can't redo an extremely complex 3D character with a hell of a rig in 4 months.

It's bizarre how a lot of people is eating this tweet as if this can possibly be true.

Hell, if they're going to redo Sonic that means they might already be on their third try to fix this dumpster fire, supposedly that very last Eggman scene in the trailer where he has a slightly more Eggman-like look is a reshoot.

Of course, the only kind of person who would think that responding to criticism reasonably is some sort of alt-right dogwhistle.

literally staying silent or not acknowledging it would have been the sane thing to do. It's like they want gamers to actually RISE UP!!!

In light of the announced redesign, I'm going to like seeing the official trailer's shit version still pop up on forums as a meme anyways. It's also great to see all this Nintendo/Sega shitposting rise up from the ashes of the 80's and 90's and seeing console warring in cinema.

I suspect the redesign was already in the works if they still want a November release. Reckon it’s still going to look like shit, though - there’s only so much you can do with a character like Sonic in 3D.

Nobody in their right mind, let alone in the face of Detective Pikachu, could've moved on with a fake smile going "Y-yeah boss, it's great".

I'm 99% they either had a backup model just in case, or did this well aware of the extra attention they could get. What's better than a video game movie? One that'll ring controversy but also "listening to the fans" for decades.

This screams 4D chess move. There’s no way in hell they’re going to turn Sonic’s design around this late in the game.

We’re six months from the premiere. By this point marketing and promotional materials using the current design have been in the works for months, with some teaser posters having already been shipped out to movie theaters months ago. Toys based on his design have been approved and sent to Chinese sweatshops. McDonalds or Burger King executives are approving kids’ meal toys based on his design. Some big brand food tie in and the marketing campaign for it using his design is already in the works. On average this kind of shit costs just as much as the movie’s production budget.

And then there’s the animation for Sonic. Making the model, hiring a motion capture actor, creating realistic fur textures, animating and making sure there’s no clipping issues, rendering so the character appears to react properly to the lighting and weather conditions. This kind of shit ain’t cheap.

Redoing Sonic at this point would mean flushing millions upon millions of dollars down the toilet. No director has the power to make that kind of budgetary decision, not in a small independent production and absolutely not in a big studio production like this. That’s the producer’s job, and if the producers for this film did approve it they need to be committed because they must be suicidal or insane to throw away their careers like that.

This is a marketing ploy designed to foster a false sense of good will towards the movie. Either they’ve had the “true” design in the works from the beginning and the one from the trailer was a fake, or the changes will be incredibly minor and we’ll still be stuck with Sonic The Manlet.
