If this was the idea they went with for the eyes I genuinely think people a lot of people would've really loved it, not everyone, but certainly a sizable chunk of the audience, and definitely more than with what they're currently doing.
It's going to be interesting seeing comparisons of the two, while I don't think either really needs to be tied to the properties they're with Detective Pikachu's very clearly embraced Pokemon, it's using it for more than just a selling point. The Sonic movie is very clearly Sonic in name only, the only thing clearly related to Sonic itself is, well, Sonic. Whe next closest thing is Eggman, but the only reason Jim Carrey's being called Eggman's because he's the villain, he share no traits with the actual character. Literally everything else has nothing to do with the source material, it just comes across as a buddy cop movie that was put in the dumpster, then pulled back out again and replaced one of the characters with Sonic.

But you can't make make minors watch something that is so aethestically unpleseant. This is bordering into abuse. I mean...it's deeply disturbing, Sonic's mouth looks like it came from those old Clutch Cargo cartoons, and I'm pretty sure that that black truck is Goliath from Knight Rider. When Cyclops screamed, I screamed with him.

It won't kill the franchise, but no one will try making another Sonic movie until the mid 2040's or so.

It's hilarious to see literally everyone come from wherever they were before to shit all over the trailer. To be honest I am surprised at how the design even made it through as I assume you've got a team of animators and artists and not one person pointed out that it looks uncanny and strange. Maybe that person was ignored or fired but the internet didn't disappoint....people are reacting like I expected them to.
