What I meant to say is that the first 2 movies were based on the first 2 games and the third one was based on Sonic Adventure 2's story. And that the simple model change of Sonic made this all possible since he no longer looks like a bootleg made by Chinese slaves.

The second movie was a combination of the 2nd and 3rd games, actually.

Nice try though.

Finally saw the 3rd movie today. It was great for a movie night, the fight between Super Sonic and Super Shadow, and them teaming up with Live and Learn playing in the background (with lyrics, no less) was pretty damn hype. I'm also glad they're finally starting to realize that we don't want to see the annoying human sidekicks in a Sonic movie.
I knew the 4th would have either Amy or Metal Sonic, but I didn't expect both and it's such a great surprise. Can't say I'm a fan of how there's an army of Metal Sonics, he should be his own character instead of some clone army. Still, I hope Neo or Metal Overlord appears as Heroes is my favorite Sonic game and Metal is my favorite character.
I also hope that they explore Sonic's original world more in the 4th movie, so far we've only got little snippets of it and it could use more development.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say I really disliked what they did with Gerald's character. I've always pictured him as a very tragic, broken man and I feel like Jim Carrey's constant ego trip humor detracted from that. Also not a fan of the GUN soldier not shooting Maria directly, I get why they did it, but everything else about that scene was so perfect that I thought they were gonna have the balls to show it.

Gerald's portrayal is definitely leaning into Jim's ego (not that it was his decision most likely, but you can tell he had a lot of input) and it suffers a bit for it. I choose to see it as the logical outcome of Gerald being allowed to stew for fifty years instead of dying via firing squad right away.

Game version is still superior, mostly because it has more to work from, but I found him entertaining enough.

My issue with Gerald is that I feel when he drops the goofy act near the end, he should've stopped being goofy and been more serious since at that point, why bother to keep pretending.

Maria's death is honestly more messed up in the movie when rewatching it since you could hear her scream when the explosion impacts her.

In game he didn't die by firing squad right away either, which is why the cannon was rigged up with that dead man's switch explanation video as his last will.
I think the unfortunate thing with gerald in the movie is how he didn't really make a lot of the shit and was just the ideas guy for it. Small throwaway lines like "oh they built this cannon to my own specifications" and shit. That and them deciding to make the laser and a 30 second sa2 GUN enemy cameo the main threat instead of a colony drop. Most of the stuff in the film clearly kind of had to work around the "sonic is an alien" shit they introduced in the first one kinda similarly to what ended up hurting Archie and sonic X's game adaptations.

Gerald in this seems to fill specifically the "eggman nega" role, where it's a guy related to robotnik directly that mirrors him and is equally goofy at a glance but has darker/more fucked up intentions for the world and actually fucking hates robotnik and sees him more as a means to an end despite teaming up with and being friendly with him for a good chunk of the plot after his introduction. For people that don't play the various spinoff games eggman nega shows up in, he's first introduced as an alternate universe's equivalent of robotnik, but then a few games later is retconned/revealed to actually be his great grandson from the future or some shit like that who time travelled to the past and does dimension hopping shit because he fucking hates how his family name was ruined by what a massive fuckup robotnik was seen as historically. I don't know if this was intentional but in the slim chance it was I can see why they'd do this since both gerald and nega are grey mustache robotniks who in their darkest moment became fueled by vengeance and hatred design wise.

I also noticed while watching gerald kind of replaces rouge's spot in the trio of bad guys structurally, as in "new character that shows up and is later revealed to have their own goals outside robotnik's deal" though that was also shadow in the OG game with the doomsday plot thing, though with that it was him letting his lust for vengeance cloud his better judgement rather than being directly manipulated in the movie. None of them really fill the "government agent" bit (agent stone fills that part technically but it's never brought up that he was one of the GUN guys alongside robotnik in the first movie in the movies after as far as I remember). I guess you could say stone fills the "informant/person who kinda finds out what really is going on right as shit hits the fan" role rouge did in SA2 but my point is I get why she wasn't included. "sonic characters = aliens plotline makes it weird for there to be just one of the small animal people as a fed pretending to be a criminal ally only in it for the money, and they already got enough characters to fill in the various roles in the plot.

It's unfortunate IMO that the biolizard is just a movie blink and you miss it thing and shadows backstory is entirely just "we found this alien frozen in a meteor and thawed him out" because as ridiculous as it may be to some studio execs, genetically engineering creatures with latent regenerative abilities as a way to try and find a cure for degenerative diseases makes the "ultimate lifeform" moniker make more sense. That way, it's not just a throwaway line about shadow being cool like it seems if you don't know his backstory. That's literally what they were trying to create in SA2, a lifeform that could survive fucking anything thrown at it to use in medical research for the benefit of humanity. Maria's death going from a direct shot to an actual accident from an explosion when the soldiers were told to stand down was both more and less impactful from different points of view but narratively it still gives reason for shadow and gerald to gain resentment for the world. I like how the movie accurately shows how while shadow was in cryostasis he just was reliving those moments on loop for the last 50 years something that IMO makes a lot more sense than the "oh gerald just like uhhh tampered with his memories or something i guess" youtube people constantly frame it as being because they neglect that the BIOLIZARD in game lore is also named "shadow". Like even as a kid playing sa2 I could grasp exactly why shadow ended up the way he did motivation wise and this movie kind of showed that perfectly.

I watched the movie today. It's surprisingly loyal to Shadow's lore and it has elements of the original Sonic Adventure 2 despite diverging from it, and our beloved ow-the-edgehog does act like his original self instead of Coldsteel the Hedgeheg in Sonic Boom and Forces. Shadow is one of my favorite Sonic characters and I'm glad to see him fleshed out and not flanderized.

Also, I became very sad and almost cried believing that Shadow probably didn't live through the explosion at the end, but then I remembered he was immortal. He was confirmed to survive at the post-credits scene.
It was loyal to none of his lore

I had to stop reading the Bible because just glancing at one at this point makes me the most mentally ill person in existence.
I don’t like the Bible, I don’t like religion, I don’t like any of it, I don’t like thinking about it and I feel like that’s wrong but reading it was actually making me sick.
I got so stressed out and depressed, I ended up not getting out of bed for like a week. I slept for like 24 hrs at a time and I spent so much time asleep I wasn’t eating enough, I lost weight and got sick to my stomach. I ended up being so sick to my stomach I couldn’t even take a bite of bread without feeling like I was going to throw up. Then I ended up with diarrhea.

So anyway I decided to stop reading the Bible after that and have just tried to stop thinking as much about anything.

This is all Sonic 3’s fault. From now on I will blame all of my problems on that movie and how shit it was.

I finally got around to watching the rest of it because I stumbled across the whole thing on twitter and it was so much worse than I thought it would be. Absolute garbage. It doesn’t feel anything like the Sonic franchise I love so I simply will not be watching anymore of these awful awful movies.

I still feel like I am not over it. Until the point that we get a fully animated faithful Sonic the Hedgehog movie adaptation I will hold these live action monstrosities in utter contempt.

I despise Jim Carrey, his unfunny acting and how he has made himself basically the main character in these movies. I never want to have to see his face again.

What I have live and learned from this situation is that people praise absolutely trash and that my opinion is better than everyone else’s.

God bless. I’m going to continue to be a Sonic 3 Giga Hater. Sayonara for now Sonic Movie Thread.

As someone surrounded by adult sonic fans (mostly thick Rouge ai slop enjoyers), I've no fucking clue about Sonic other than the dogshit games but these movies have been fun. Like, actual laughing fun. The cringe writing is absurd but somehow they stick the landing most of the time, if just in the execution of dialogue. I'd sooner be forced to watch this trilogy ten times over than Minecraft or Angry Birds just once "for the lols of it".

It's actually funny how many franchises are kept artificially alive, still given movies and games despite nobody playing them, and then Sonic of all things making great movies and forgetable games still. The fact people are furious about these movies is hilarious, given Carey literally went out of retirement for them and is having a blast doing it.

Also, that corridor dance segment was 100% choreographed by those RGB-in-the-dark X Factor guys, right?

Sonic is kind of a big deal in terms of video game characters and his games still tend to sell. The movies probably helped boost publicity a bit though kind of like what happened to Transformers, especially after the whole debacle with the studio actually listening to people in terms of design and output unlike other media adaptations that aren't accurate to the source.

Anyways I hope this concept art they released for sonic 3 ends up being what eggman looks like in sonic 4. Metal sonic beng his own character here instead of just generic jobber drone like he was in the post credits teaser gives me a little hope.

Also reworking the classic eggman cape into a ming the merciless robe for jim carrey to wear is fucking incredible lmao.

Closest thing we're ever going to get to the spirit of the games is the old OVA anime move it seems, and even that one had weird background lore that was wildly different from the games despite the characters being basically 1 to 1 of what they're implied to be like via character animations in game/described like in the manuals.

Frontiers definitely benefited from the first movie doing well, to the tune of being the best selling game in the franchise since SA2.

I would like it if they have like the Mecha Sonics, the Tails Doll and the Mecha Knuckles all in the film to act as various aspects of an Eggman or Metallix army with an Emperor Metallix/Neo Metal that usurps Robotnik either at the end or at the start of a fifth film. I dont mind Jobber Robots, but I really want their to be an actually cool, intelligent robot that can work as a major villain too because Metal is cool because he gets actual development from a mute, but still cocky mockery to a completely insane robot with a Starscream energy. I would guess Eggman's uncertain fate and Rockwell not liking Sonic family is there so they can go anywhere with who created the Metals. It could be our Robotnik, a descendant from the future like Nega, an alternate timeline Robotnik who won during the events of 2, it could be Stone or it could be GUN
