Sonic Movie Thread - From a Disastrous Teaser/Trailer to Not That Bad a Movie; Got a Sequel
Sega had Memphis Tennessee use the Tilted Towers as a literal attack in Shadow Generations. I'm sure they knew of the Ugandan Knuckles meme and made Knuckles sound like that on purpose.
I'm more of a casual Sonic fan (autist over the old archie comics run) - but was it ever explained that if Maria and Ivo were both grandchildren of Gerald Robotnik, are the two of them siblings or cousins? (I don't need the full family tree details, I was just curious if that much was answered.)

They're cousins. This has been a thing since SA2. IIRC maria's the "older cousin" but died when he was like either a toddler baby or a fetus spermoid it's kind of inconsistent there.
I'm just assuming the Gerald in the present was secretly Black Doom, trying to use the space cannon to destroy the world, cause no way a 110 year old is doing all that shit, or just being released from prison in exchange for building a death ray. I chuckled at the thought Shadow having Goku's backstory, an alien sent to conquer a planet but getting amnesia.
Saw it with my husband, and we're both Sonic autists, so we had a lot of fun.
We both popped off hard from the Biolizard cameo. We both wanted it, because Shadow's prototype being a lizard is funny, but we expected a quick shot of a poster with it on it. When we saw the new origin story, we both resigned that they wouldn't have the Biolizard... Until they did.
And, personally, as a Chao Garden autist, I loved the attention to detail, and them changing it to a themed cafe. I want to watch it again, solely to overanalyze the background details. Like, they included a Knuckles chao costume!
So maybe there's an Amy chao costume...
I watched some recording of it on YouTube, and, when the lights go out, you can hear the noise they make when they're evolving.
And I know I saw the TV you can earn from beating the challenge races in SA2.
It adds nothing to the story to include these little details, but it satisfies something deep in me. It's as if I know they've played the games, even if they haven't.
I think the Egg Canon also keeps the same window shape as the game, so that's cool. I always liked the recycled PSO models in the game, and their aesthetics, so it was nice seeing them.
Listen, my one complaint (aside from the cuts away from Live and Learn) was I didn't get the classic, "Half of the moon is gone?!" line from a cast member. Something about Amy's delivery in the game is iconic to me.
But, with Amy being shown... She could still ask that in the next movie.
Tl;Dr the little finger wag, hologam of him kicking an animal, and other simplistic animations from CD already speak volumes about metal sonic as a character, the OVA and heroes built on that, and YT video essayists fucking ignore it because he's a robot which will lead to sega possibly ignoring it
Honestly think the last time I saw anyone show Metal Sonic as being the threatening foil he is was in the fifth Sonic Shorts and it was still played in a comedic manner. Hopefully the writers are actually going back through the franchise proper for him.
They'll probably want to use Big-Ass Metal Overlord from Heroes in some way. One of them uses the Chaos Emeralds, or they all merge, or Eggman pushes a button that says "Bring out the Heavy Metal"

I finally got to watch Sonic 3 last night, and I really enjoyed it. Shadow and the Robotniks were my favorites, with this easily being Shadow's best characterization since Sonic Adventure 2.
Movie's made over two hundred million at the box office since the 20th. Still has places like China and parts of Europe to open in, too. The second movie made four hundred million total, for reference's sake.

It's worth mentioning that Sonic 1 and 2 were coming out right as the lockdowns were beginning and officially ending, respectively, and they still turned a profit as a result of sheer dumb luck. Sonic 3 was going to do better statistically as a result.
Now Sonic 2 had a better opening, but Sonic 3 is having a better run.
Sonic/Paramount better thank their lucky stars they're being rewarded for their efforts, and not fuck this up out of hubris. I dunno what it'll take for them make a billion dollars off a single movie, but I think they have a shot at it in the future.
Wicked also made the same claim and it's really funny seeing both being blown the fuck out by the "cgi rodent fight" and "jim carrey doing the thing mike meyers and eddie murphy would do in some movies" movie. Wicked also has a much more aggro marketing campaign which adds to the comedy.
Wishing we'd have Chaos in the next movie instead of Metal Sonic, it's weird having hedgehogs as antagonists in two back to back movies. SA2 had the Artificial Chaos enemies on the ARK so it would've made sense as the other power source alongside Shadow's chaos energy. Could explain it as getting released by debris from the Eclipse Canon. And would be a chance to tie into all the echidna tribe shit like how the Knuckles show should've been
The Box Office Mojo website reported that the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film once again topped the U.S. box office in its second weekend, earning an estimated US$38 million.
