"Lmao why do people still consume kids cartoons and make AI of sonic and shit!?"
>Every kino kids animation is a remake of 00s franchises

Makes you wonder. Like genuinely, why is so much new teen media just people doing shit? People on earth, people with horns in hell, people with gems in their navals. Where'd monsters and robots go?

I think and hope that they establish in the fourth movie she's just been living in disguise as a really short woman for years ala a covert version of SA1. I hope they try to square her classic characterization of having a crush on Sonic with all the token girl role model aspects they have to put in like they did with Peach (which yea that sucked but what else they gonna do when you have to write a character's motivation and development based off someone with no real role outside of being a living inciting incident)

They just hit gold with Sonic from minute one. Design, attitude, the whole thing. Autism might go a long way, but only the most iconic franchises can survive as many ups and downs as this spikey fucker has.

I liked it. It's not as good as the second one despite having a lot less Fat Nigger Antics, and the timing of the humour is a little off and falls a bit flat. The film concentrates mostly on the main characters and not the humans, which is good.
The special effects are amazing.
All in all, it's worth seeing.

Chris-Chan will be in paroxysms of joy at seeing Amy Rose in the end credits scene.

Got out of the theater about a half-hour ago. Hubby and I enjoyed it, and I'm glad we're getting more and more screentime with Sonic and friends and Eggman more than the OCs (even though I don't mind them). Splitting screentime with Sonic and Shadow must've been a bit of a challenge since in a sense, this is Shadow's story more at the forefront, and he's definitely the reason butts got put in seats, but his name's not in the title lol. I'm still glad they kept his friendship with Maria as familial, although it kinda sucks Gerald wasn't around in the flashbacks as much as he could've because it otherwise makes no sense that he would decide to blow up the planet because his granddaughter's gone. Also lol Shadow now canonically has a lisp, it's kinda cute.

Special shout-out goes to Jim Carrey for killing it as always, the Robotnik dynamic was a lot of fun to watch. I think it's hilarious their bonding montage was all in VR, like that's just way too damn good. I swear, give the main writers some big praise for some real funny subversions while keeping everyone in character.

I'm so glad they delivered on the "Live & Learn" cocktease from months back, honestly makes up for skipping the first Adventure storyline since honestly I have no idea how they'll go about doing Chaos right now. Maybe it's being considered.

Oh, and the drawing of baby Sonic and Longclaw makes me think of chasethehedgehog since I didn't see another Sanic, but I knew they'd have to make a shout-out to other Sonic fan-art. If I remembered wrong, please correct me.

I fucking knew we were gonna get Metal Sonic and Amy, but the punchline being Sonic ran all the way to New York to encounter the massive horde was funny, first off, and makes you wonder why it is they were in New York to begin with. Who sent them there, or were they tailing Sonic the whole time? God, the sequel bait makes me anxious in how the next movie's gonna handle the plot, as well as Amy's crush on Sonic.

Still gonna chew on it some more since I didn't have a whole lot of "laugh-out-loud" moments while still being in-tune with how the characters interact with each other. Like Knuckles is just too pure for this world, man, him being ESL is too perfect.

The third movie was ruined by its lack of a sheboon sperging out like the previous one's wedding scene.
I'm disappointed we didn't get a 45 minute black couple honeymoon as the follow-up to the wedding. Hopefully it will be in the deleted scenes on the DVD

funny enough in Japan the movies called Sonic x Shadow: TOKYO MISSION. i think sonic 2 was called Sonic vs. Knuckles

@Kari Kamiya For me it was Knuckles remarking further on the Pokemon comment to Tails that just did it in for me, even if the joke wasn't further elaborated on than from what was shown in the trailer. I dunno, something about a Sonic character directly referencing an IP from their biggest competitor back in the 90's just...clicks with me.

Some choice comments.

In the game he says it to make fun of people who captured him, in the movie he says it for the epic reference
Judging by what you said alongside this it is very odd and is a clear case of them trying to retroactively work gun into not being outright antagonistic feds like they were in sa2 due to them already having that role in the first movie when robotnik was working for them. The reason he's taken into custody in the game is assumed by sonic to be a case of mistaken identity once he finds out about shadow but then later it turns out that he was basically a cover story to keep shadow escaping (and his existance in general) under wraps.

This all could have probably been avoided if they didn't keep with the "sonic is an ET type alien escaping government custody and ace ventura" plot in the first movie. They're in a clear position where they want to pull stuff from the games but have a kind of nonsense mismatched lore in a way kind of similar to what happened when the archie and fleetway comics tried actually adapting the games in a way that matched up to pre-existing comic and DiC lore. Sonic X also had this issue and did the whole "sonic is an alien" thing too. I think the biggest part of these movies' success is partly due to how much fun the people involved clearly had making them.

Never gonna stop being funny to me though how Structurally adaptation wise these are the same as the bob hoskins mario movie but that one was also infamously nightmarish production wise. People have kinda warmed up to it over the years but we're never gonna see what that sequel bait was about sinceit's been decades and several actors are fucking dead. Still holding out that someday we get some kind of animated movie accurate to the absolute wacky shit in mario and sonic without the stipulation of "alien/alien world" tacked on but that's clearly a pipedream at this point. Even the illumination mario did the alien world shit and clearly has leftovers of the earlier drafts where mario wasn't the real hero of the story littered throughout it. At least sonic doesn't have that shit going on but I am mildly cautious now with sonic 4's teaser.
Seriously though Mario's lore is prime comedy family friendly movie material. The plot of the first NES game carries over from the arcade games. What happens in the arcade games? Oh ok so mario's a handyman in NYC with a gorilla he got off someone that eventually gets loose and kidnaps his GF. He recaptures the gorilla and starts beating it but OH NO the gorilla had a kid while he was loose off camera and that kid rescues his dad and fucks off to some vague nearby area. Mario and his bro then get a job checking out some pipes people keep finding weird huge animals crawling out of and eventually they decide to go deeper in only to find the pipes lead to a foreign country being terrorized by a big fucking turtle man who really wants GF. Like that whole fucking thing right there could be the first movie. Hell you could work in side characters like foreman spike and stanley in there like how they worked spike into the illumination movie as just some dude mario knows.

Watched the movie with my wife on Christmas, and it didn't disappoint. I'm not even too deep into Sonic, but I enjoyed the whole movie, especially the DBZ like fight between Sonic and Shadow, followed by the scene where they obliterate an army of robots together. Didn't expect Live and Learn playing during that scene. That was awesome.

Even my wife, who knows jack shit about Sonic, told me that was cool and really enjoyed the movie overall. One funny thing was that she said that Gerald Robotnik, with his white coat and barrel belly, kinda looks like his father, and after that I can't stop seeing Gerald as my father in law for good portion of the movie.

(which yea that sucked but what else they gonna do when you have to write a character's motivation and development based off someone with no real role outside of being a living inciting incident)
Amy in sonic only got truly kidnapped once as far as I remember and afterwards was the mostly competent but not super genius friend comedically hampered by intentionally played up female incel stalker tendencies. Technically 3 times kidnapping if you count sa1 and sa2 but those games it was brief and was more a roadblock setback type similar to what happens to other main party members. Like "oh we're trying to get this bird to it's family oh god oh fuck giant seemingly invincible robot abduction" or "we need to get the fake emerald to the canno-oh no eggman knows and he's now holding one of us at gunpoint yelling about how we need to get sonic in here now or he's going to start shooting people"

Also peach has been characterized very clearly in games beyond just being a kidnapping victim. Good examples being the dialogue in the paper mario games and the old official mario comics. Kind of wish the mario movie pulled more from that specific stuff for characterization. Then again all that stuff is mostly from back when nintendo still had a kind of edge about them sometimes where you'd have a kid snapping their own neck as the opening of a boss fight in an E rated game and jokes about toad's hat were more centered around him being bald than "is it his head or his hat ooo" so who knows what their intent with her was beyond reeling illumination's BS "she girlboss mario stupid and lame!" shit back a good bit.

I haven't seen the new movie yet but I've been spoiled on everything and I don't think I'm even going to have the proper time where I'll be able to see it before it ends up on blu ray and dvd much like the other movies weirdly. One fo the first non trailer bits of footage I saw was the post credit scene with amy and it bothers me how metal sonic is just like an easily disposed mass produced thing. That's clearly pulling fromt he UK sonic comics somewhat because everywhere else he's kind of important. It'd be cool seeing his personality being done justice but that's probably not gonna happen if there's just a swarm of him controlled by someone else. Hell even the "metallix" guys the swarm of metal sonics is clearly basing itself on were clearly still like individual characters of some kind, but unimportant.

On a good day metal sonic in the games tends to be kind of a silent smartass cheeky bastard who knows he's able to go faster than sonic and eats fucking pavement by the end, which after a few sessions leads to bad days where he starts overcompensating and power scale boosting to beat sonic and monologuing about how he's "the real sonic" when he himself knows that's bullshit and he's never gonna be the real sonic. He's more of sonic's shadow than the character literally named shadow. I don't like how YT vidya people now frame metal sonic as some scary unfeeling murder drone thing with no personality when describing sonic lore and poo poo away his dialogue from the post 3d era as "oh he got reprogrammed out of that after that game and that was just experimental upgrades!"
I just keep thinking sometimes about how the anime movie back in the day that also didn't follow actual sonic lore but got the characterization down perfect in a time where there was much less writing to pull from literally had metal slap sonic's hand away and let himself burn to death and melt in the magma while uttering his only line in the movie that isn't just goofy little bleepy bloop sounds everyone somehow understood. "there is only one sonic"

Can't find the clip by itself anymore but I can find the full final fight. I think they were really able to capture it in this movie made only a few years after his debut as a character and I wish we got more shit like this in terms of Metal sonic where they clearly understand or conveniently happen to coincidentally capture his deal.
There's some extraneous shit in this about how sonic and metal being partially linked being able to feel shit the other one does due to some tech fuckery but it's basically used for a gag where metal sees up someone's skirt and sonic starts reacting to it or a brief bit with tails overloading the link to stun metal.

Tl;Dr the little finger wag, hologam of him kicking an animal, and other simplistic animations from CD already speak volumes about metal sonic as a character, the OVA and heroes built on that, and YT video essayists fucking ignore it because he's a robot which will lead to sega possibly ignoring it

EDIT TO AVOID DOUBLE POST YES I KNOW THE WALLS GETTING TALLER: If they don't butcher amy in sonic 4 like the post flynn era's been doing toning down everything actually fun about her character that'd be great, but you know what'd be even better on top of that? You know how they play do the "ooohi clapp when I see tha thing" in these movies to some extent?
Yeah put the robot from sa1 in since you already fucked metal sonic up somewhat. No I don't mean gamma but his older sibling ZERO that's constantly fucking trying to get the bird. also play this shit when he bursts through a wall or some shit like the kool aid man.

I'm just assuming the Gerald in the present was secretly Black Doom, trying to use the space cannon to destroy the world, cause no way a 110 year old is doing all that shit, or just being released from prison in exchange for building a death ray. I chuckled at the thought Shadow having Goku's backstory, an alien sent to conquer a planet but getting amnesia.

yea the thing with modern adaptions you have to realize is the people writing them dont adapt the parts which are best suited to adaption or analyze whatever could be used to construct the best adaption possible. They dont do that anymore, instead they adapt the most recent aspects and then use either wikipedia or an Ian Levine type "continuity expert" to help them add in epic references. That's what makes the Sonic movies so rare, they are made by a Sonic autist for other Sonic autists. I hope they try to work in some of Amy's Fleetway characterization if they really wanna make her more proactive, tho I fear we'll get Boom Amy without all the flaws which made her funny and likeable (essentially missing the point of that interpretation if they do sand it down)

But this has unfortunately been going on since the Raimi Spider-Man films, and I love those films but they were clearly good because Raimi had prior knowledge and a love of the character that he used memories of to inform the greater aspects of those movies. In terms of what they adapt they kinda lazily just copy the Ultimate comics because theyre most recent and being most recent they are more cinematic and easier to adapt. Same thing with Spider-Man 3, Raimi didnt have knowledge to rely on as Venom was after his time so just made a half-baked adaptation of the tv show episodes which featured Venom. Relying on an adaptation of an adaptation to make the bones of a story which I guarantee would be more interesting if Raimi understood the character enough to do a faithful version of the original saga

Another example I can give is the Spiderverse movies, their versions of characters like Miguel O'Hara are character assassinated because the creators dont read or understand the books but they put a ton of love instead into epic references like to the Atari Green Goblin sprite. It's almost like franchise masturbation, and like when fandoms make porn of the character or fanfic they tend to base it off of some weird headcanon version of the character these creators essentially make stories not based around the stories that make them good but instead because of the fandom headcanon made reality

Which is why these movies are so surprising, because they have a lot of those hallmarks (Knux eats teh grapez trololol) but they include those references because they have a genuine piece of knowledge of those characters and put that in to flex that knowledge yes but also because it's somewhat relevant to how they characterize those personalities as more truer to the text. Ironically they can get away with changing Knuckles to be a big brother figure and not really a loner from a floating island because they got right the fact that he's an exotic warrior from another way of life who is stubborn, honorable and gullible while taking things literally due to wanting to be true to the code of his now-forgotten people. They're even able to turn Sonic and Knuckles' clashing ideals of responsibility versus freedom into a generational conflict in order to give it that precedential meaning

It's still not perfect, in an ideal world we would have a script writer sit down, play everything or consume everything and then use the best pieces to make a great story that absorbs the essence. For all his faults Greg Weisman did this for Spectacular Spider-Man (sorry, have Spidey on the brain today) and because of this he was basing his story decisions on what he liked best about the old comics which he reread and thus he goes for story decisions that only he could have went with but make sense and in some cases are only weird because we've never seen it done before. If youve seen that show, remember when Peter wants to date Betty Brant? That's a more accurate take on the comics to have her as one of his first crushes because she was his first real love interests, they update it for their story but the fact it's there shows that he did read the comics and saw that there was a great story there. All other times a great story is forgotten because people are reading an adaption of an adaption of an adaption in order to make their next adaption of an adaption of an adaption of an adaption

I also would really like Neo Metal to be a leader of this group of Metallix, with maybe different levels of Metal in different jobs (Mecha/Silver are the drones, Metals are the soldiers, Mecha IIs are the brutes) but I hope even tho it's a mistranslation they keep the idea of Neo Metal as being so insane he thinks Sonic is a copy of him. My pitch would be the Metals are commissioned by GUN based off old prototypes, maybe Neo Metal is the Prototype and he is powered by a Sonic quill which gives him some form of sentience or belief he's the real deal. Itd dovetail off of Ritter's characters antagonism nicely imo

I'm still convinced the voice they used for him sounding like ugandan knuckles was not a coincidence.
