Just discovered this thread so might as well post:

Saw Sonic 3 last Sunday, and in general it's about what I expected and I walked away mostly satisfied. I come to these Sonic movies expecting some decent CGI fanservice, references and Jim Carrey doing what he does best and I'm glad those things still hold up well.

I'm also glad they reduced the human side characters' screentime to when it's actually more suiting to the plot rather than filling up time with relationship drama that comes out of the blue.

The Good: As much as the SA2 Shadow background got changed a fair amount with no ARK, him being an alien and Maria as far as I know not suffering from Not-AIDS, I still found it worked well in it's own context, especially with Gerald being alive here serving as essentially the devil on Shadow's shoulder to hold on to his vengeance for Maria's death to mirror how in the game-verse upon Maria's death Gerald also saw Shadow as just a means to an end.

Shadow's characterization here also harkens back to his OG SA2 depiction and why I actually liked the character before being turned into such a stereotypical edgy punchline. Reeves really nailed Shadow actually having emotion and going through moments of regret, doubt and depression and I loved it for that far more than just the expected 'I'm 2Cool4U, lesser life forms'-schtick.

And the interactions between the cast is also still good, especially with movie-exclusive Ivo and Gerald bonding and eventual expected betrayal that we'd never see in the games, and how Tails and Knuckles actually get to do more active team stuff here, the best one being when they both went for saving Sonic from burning up in the Earth's atmosphere.

And Ivo's sacrifice and final stream message to Stone actually made me emotional as both Stone getting the acknowledgment from his boss he deserved for so long as well as a possible effective exit for Carrey's gig as the character.

The Bad: As much as I liked the Ivo/Gerald stuff, one major issue I have is this weird inconsistency and massive missed opportunity for the movie to expand upon the Robotnik family drama exclusive to the movie continuity (and if someone maybe remembers/knows things better, I'd appreciate your weight): Ivo mentioned a few rare times he's a orphan and I wondered why he didn't ask Gerald about what happened to his parents or heck, I don't even suppose he ever knew about Maria until Gerald namedropped her when he betrayed Ivo? Maybe it would have been more effective if Gerald filled him in on her and how he wants to destroy GUN as retribution with help from a brilliant grandson he wishes to impart his legacy with, which makes the means-to-an-end reveal more effective? Maybe this was a deleted scene, I dunno.

Also, Shadow and Gerald were right next to Maria when the explosion occured that killed her. I can totally believe that Shadow being a supernatural alien can survive an explosion with little real injury, but Gerald, a guy at the time in his 60's? Come on.

Overall I was very satisfied but one thing I majorly wonder about is how they're going to carry forward with a main villain if they're seriously axing off Carrey's Robotnik character? How would the Metal Sonics in the mid-credits scene play into this if they have a different creator or something else activated them?

Frankly, Shadow needed more interactions with the Sonic crew in general. I really did like Sonic and Shadow's very brief friendship moment on the moon but it was sooo brief. At least the fighting scenes were beyond kick ass.

Oh totally. Screw the fucking Twitter Takeover crap from this year and how repetitive their rivalry is everytime it gets brought up. That moon segment did a shitton more to actually showcase genuine creative depth in the interactions between these two than the games ever did after SA2 and to a small degree 06. Shadow trying to goad Sonic into killing him and even asking him about dealing with depression is something the games would likely never touch on and we need more like that with other characters.

If Shadow's origin mention and Elba and Reeves' comments on wanting a possible Knuckles/Shadow show is any indication, I'd also be on board for a spinoff featuring the Black Arms and Rouge.

I feel like if Carrey comes back since it is possible, they'd stick to canon, but if he does retire, I can see it being some sort of contingency plan he had, or they could have a different creator like Agent Stone or Eggman Nega

The most obvious solution going forward is to have Agent Stone take over the mantle of Robotnik. The way Metal Sonic appears in the post credits scene is very reminiscent of The Terminator, so we could possibly be looking at a closed time loop sort of thing with Stone trying to bring Robotnik back.

Saw it today. It was a little hokey in some places, but Jim Carrey was once again the fucking centerpiece of the film. The double act made me wonder if he could pull it off well, and he did not fail to amuse - he was my main draw for this one after Sonic 2.

Overall, it was lacking in places, but it was a solid watch imo. It has that Transformers quality to it but is definitely more on-the-ball with its audience.

That shit was so mediocre lmao

- Like 80% of the movie is I Clapped When I Saw It

- Stuff like Sonic saying his line from SA2 while he's in the helicopter makes no sense. In the game he says it to make fun of people who captured him, in the movie he says it for the epic reference

- Them trying really hard to force Sonic and his relationship with Tom as a father/son thing is really cringey, that's including the family stuff with Maddie and Knuckles/Tails

- There's literally no reason for GUN to think Sonic is malicious beyond being a callback to SA2

- Why did GUN let Tom and Maddie into the vault room? Wouldn't they just tell GUN that Sonic isn't trying to steal the keycards to be evil?

- Retarded dance sequence #2

- Embarassing pop culture references

Amy and Metal Sonic showing up at the end was kinda cool I guess

6/10

Or just reject it enirely and focus on the stuff about Shadow that makes you happy.

Anyway, I think Jesus would be okay with you being an autist who loves Shadow to an obsessive degree. Seriously, don't self flagellate yourself over it. Just find a way for your obsession to make you happy rather than miserable.
Yeah, I think I’m going to just reject it entirely lol

I appreciate your long thought out reply. You’re a lot more understanding than most people in the internet.

I was exaggerating a bit with my whole getting into religion over this movie thing. But it generally did get me to start reading the Bible. I’ve been meaning to for a while and yeah I kept putting it off in favor of other things. I was raised in a very religious household and grew up going to church but really came to hate it all. I think a lot of mental illness comes from religion. And a lot of pastors are just really nasty people who like power. I don’t think I ever stopped believing in it but I’ve just been kind of ignoring it.
I think what I want to do is read the Bible and learn what it actually says about God instead of listening to what churches and mentally ill boomers say.
The movie’s interpretation of Shadow being as shit as it was for me was the push I needed to start doing that I guess lmao

Thank you Shadow the Hedgehog

Walters was the reason GUN didn't fuck with Sonic for the most part. Once he was gone, that one chick (who didn't like aliens) was in charge and would probably not believe anything they said.

As a star trek/wars/godzilla fan....

Yeah we know that pain.
Yeah, I was a bit into Star Trek for a bit, mainly the original series, it was just a super comfy show for me. Watched a bit of Next Generation, kinda liked it but I think it just wasn’t for me. But the stuff they have been doing with it now is just yikes. I’m sorry for your loss.

I used to like Star Wars a lot but those Disney ones really killed it for me. I was pissed about that but no where near as affected as I was with Shadow.

The only thing that’s come close was what Marvel did with Loki. Had a huge crush on him because I was a teen girl when that first movie came out. He continued to be my favorite character as the years went on but the movies kept getting worse and worse and so did his character. The character that showed up in his own show showed no resemblance to the one in the first Avengers movie. I watched that first season and it was so bad I decided I’m not watching any Marvel things anymore. I already hated most of what they put out but that show was the last straw. I hate Loki so much now. I still have a fond spot for the one in Thor 1 and the Avengers, maybe Thor 2 but after that, I don’t know that guy. He pisses me off.

I think I’m really tired of being disappointed by things I liked.

I didn't cheer, but I DID have a shit-eating grin on my face. Overall, actually a solid 8/10. Keanu and ESPECIALLY Jim Carrey understood the fucking assignment, less humans, which is always a positive, and making Maria a hippie rebel skater girl was NOT what I was expecting, but it was an inspired choice.
Wish she was a hippie rebel skater girl that still had space aids
