Saw the movie earlier today, it's alright but I genuinely think the first one had a better identity of it's own with how it tried to depict Sonic and Robotnik's origins differently.

Main issue I have with it is how it focuses on putting in as much game fanservice as possible rather than trying to explain/expand on possible lore stuff alluded to in the first movie, like Longclaw's fate. Unless I missed something, Longclaw was implied to have been captured by Knuckles' tribe and they went on to fight somewhere else, but Knuckles being the last one of his kind is never elaborated on properly, neither is that whole owls vs. echidna's bit to give Sonic something to wonder about Longclaw's past, Tails mentions a home planet and that never gets asked further about by Sonic when he brings it up and their friendship bonding is as basic as you expect it to be from the games' continuity.

I also legit thought that when Sonic and Tails got captured by GUN and 2 black woman went to save them that the movie got hijacked for 15 minutes and turned into a stereotypical black people comedy movie routine ala Big Momma's House. And who were those 3 Arbiter-looking dudes passing through the portal on the mushroom planet Robotnik Home Alone'd before he encountered Knuckles? Don't seem like echidna's to me.

TL'DR: Decent follow-up to the first film and alright if only caring for fanservice to the games rather than hoping for actual plot.
Legit sad we got Edge instead of Metal Sonic tho
I haven't read the tie-in comic so I can't confirm if it answers everything, but it showed that Longclaw really did die to protect Sonic and took the echidnas out with her sans Knuckles.

On a different note, one of the producers said they're planning on creating a cinematic universe. The Tails solo movie part isn't confirmed yet, though.

That's correct. Honestly I feel some of this stuff would've been better covered in the movie, but that probably would've made it even longer so it's a trade off I guess.

Getting ready to watch the first movie in preparation for the sequel and I noticed something in the SEGA logo that made my inner child very happy (blue circled part)....

SEGA acknowledged Skies of Arcadia exists....there's still hope :heart-full:

I saw the movie, I liked it. Two days of introspection later and all I keep coming back to is "What led to them using Pantera in the soundtrack?"
I like Pantera but it was so weird to hear them in this film.
I guarantee Carrey suggested it because of his history with grindcore and death metal.

I went to see it with the kids for my wife's birthday and I gave them the usual "don't be loud and obnoxious" speech. I became my dad and yelled at the screen when I heard it start playing.

Saw the first one, and yeah, it's a decent little popcorn movie as an adult....however, if this movie came out back when I was an 8 year old Sonic mega-autist, this movie would've been on rotation at the house on DVD.

Having seen the sequel today, I can say the same thing (about the first film I mean, I felt 2 was much better). In fact I kind of want to watch it again already.

I feel the same way, I fuckin' love that game and it deserves more recognition.

Brad gave it a B-. The store doesn’t really do anything new and it runs a little long, but all the characters are endearing(including the human ones), Jim Carry is in his element, Knuckles is funny without trying to be, and it’s a genuinely fun film.

I’ll be seeing it tonight myself.

In the theater right now in the pre-show at the Alamo Drafthouse. They're showing old Sonic TV commercials and a hedgehog bathing video, plus trailers of the OVA.

It's currently at a 66% on RT. If it manages to stay above 60 it may be the first video game franchise EVER to achieve a fresh rating twice. I was very happy with it, so it'll be interesting to see what American audiences think now it's out over there.

Saw it. About as solid of a family movie as the first one. Which is nice.
It grinds a little after the snowboard bit, but boy does it pick up again after.
Also, Sonic vs Knuckles was legit hype. The inner Sonic Autist was bursting with joy.

Sonic running on the waves to reach the temple was a genuinely amazing moment. I didn't expect that from watching the trailers.

I concur. Just got back from seeing it. Inner Sonic Autist was positively giddy from that and Super Sonic and Shadow's brief appearance. 7.5/10, but 8 year old me would rate it 10/10.

Also, there was an actual legit gibbering autist kid in the full theater with us. Make of that what you will.

Solid film. Nothing too surprising with the plot, but all the characters were really fun, the small nods to the games were inventive and fun to catch, and really enjoyable overall. Nothing groundbreaking, but almost exactly what I would want from a Sonic movie.

Idris Alba did good work.

Much like the first one, this was way more sweet and sincere than it had any right to be. For once, I was happy to indulge my inner autist. Solid sequel, genuinely hyped for the next one.

I'm shocked at the Sanic joke, like holy shit that was actually amazing. Makes up for lack of Ugandan Knuckles because you can tell they were avoiding it, although Knuckles' way of speaking is so stupidly charming. Lost it at him reading out loud Sonic and Tom's texts. Jim Carrey was weird in this one, but then again, Eggman literally lost his mind, so his wackiness makes sense.

It's about as good as the first, but I don't know if I can say it's better. I'm just glad we got to follow the Sonic characters compared to the movie originals who were okay (though I wish there were more father-son moments). I'm kind of a sucker for bridezilla stuff so I was okay with the Hawaii sequence, but funny that those characters up-and-vanished after that moment like lol okay. And yeah, I'll admit I gave a holler at the mid-credits scene. Like it was obvious that was going to happen, but I didn't expect the reveal to have been so soon. Guess Amy is totally confirmed despite not being officially confirmed, much to the disappointment of one of my brothers who prefers Sally over her.

Oh speaking of Easter eggs, I'm not the only one who thought the Sonic hologram marker kinda looked like Mephiles, am I? The eyes were conveniently red to make me think that.

Still is completely nuts that the video game curse is being broken by fucking Sonic of all things.
