I kneel. I thought we would have to wait another movie for him. Legit makes me hyped for the next movie.
Chadow fans just keep on winning.

Apparently
audiences that saw the Shadow reveal legit cheered. Not just nostalgia-overdosed adults either, children and teenagers were cheering when he appeared on the screen. Anyone here experience that? That French kid in the leaked Shadow reveal vid in this thread seems pretty delighted when he came on.

It astonishes me a character that hasn't been super relevant to Sonic in years has young fans.

That character has always remained fairly popular. I'm sure you could pull up polls that attest to that.

True. I guess I just considered Shadow's bigger precense in the early 2000s with SA2, StH, Heroes and 06 when he was a much more important character to be his peak popularity. I am not complaining though, I am glad kids are getting excited over him.

My movie theatre was full of 20ish yr olds (went during the week before school ended). Everyone was cheering at the mid credit's scene.
Good measure of how many autists are in my area.

Saw it yesterday. Nice family movie that got quite a few chuckles out of me. The scenes with the human characters, especially the wedding subplot, was boring as hell. In the last 30-or 40 mins the scenes with the humans made me feel like I was watching a crappy low-budget drama.

Jim Carrey lit up all the scenes he was in. There was some really zany shit, like Sonic and Tails turning up in a Siberian tavern and hijinks happening there which kinda felt on par with the absurdity of the original cartoon.

Sonic, Tails' and Knuckles' voices didn't sound like they were part of the enviroment at all. Like, I get the characters aren't actually there but there are techniques to make it sound like CGI characters are actually present, right?

Idris Elba sounded alright as Knuckles but at times his delivery was a bit flat. I think this is his first time voicing a character?

Yeah I thought that in the trailer when they're going down the mountain. I think that Idris just isn't a good VA he has voiced acted before in Zootopia and it's pretty much the same here.

What's the whole hype behind this Shadow character? To someone who never paid attention he just looks like an emo recolor. What am I missing?
I dunno how you’ve been on the Internet this long and somehow not learned about Shadow through cultural osmosis.

But yeah, pretty much all he is is a hilariously edgy black-and-red recolor of Sonic who uses guns, which makes him the subject of many memes.

Idris's take reminds of the Knuckles VA from Adventure. Fitting, really.

He didn't always use guns and originally was a one off character with a kinda touching sendoff but yeah aesthetically he's just sonic but black. More specifically super sonic though that parallel was kinda fucked over by the fact they eventually changed what super sonic looked like in the 3d games after adventure 2.

Originally in the concept art/early stages of adventure 2 development he WAS literally just edgy sonic in terms of design and was called terios or some shit like that IIRC. I'm not shitting you he was literally sonic but with a knife and a scar on his eye.

Although he's had shit writing in later games, his story when he was introduced in Sonic Adventure 2 was definitely one of the better plotlines across the whole series.
The gist of it was that 50 years ago, Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik was tasked by G.U.N. (Guardian Units of Nations, basically Sonicworld's UN) to research immortality aboard the space station ARK. At first, Gerald refused, but he later reluctantly accepted because his grandaughter Maria had an incurable illness that was only kept in remission by the low-gravity conditions aboard ARK - he was hoping that during his research he'd be able to find a cure. The scientists cynically named it "Project Shadow", because they were trying to achieve something that could not exist in this world.
After many failed attempts and imperfect designs, Gerald eventually succeeded. He had created the ultimate lifeform - Shadow the Hedgehog (based off of the prophetic Sonic murals seen in in the background of Angel Island in Sonic 3, that's why he's a hedgehog)
He was raised aboard ARK alongside Maria, who he grew close with. However, tragedy struck when G.U.N. raided the ARK - they'd decided the line of research was too dangerous, despite being the ones who requested it in the first place. The scientists involved were killed, and Shadow saw Maria shot by GUN soldiers right in front of him as she helped Shadow escape in her last moments. He was frozen in a pod and Gerald was executed. The entire incident was covered up and the civilians evacuated from ARK were fed lies.
50 years later during the events of the game, Eggman finds him while raiding a GUN base. He awakens Shadow, who promises him the power to conquer the world if he brings the seven Chaos Emeralds to ARK. This is what happens during most of the game, and it's not until the final chapter where things really go down. Once all 7 Emeralds are hooked up to ARK, a prerecorded message from Gerald plays. Having gone mad after the death of his granddaughter, he'd reprogrammed ARK to use the Emeralds' power to crash into Earth, destroying humanity as revenge. He'd manipulated Shadow's memories and Shadow had been going along with it the whole time. Only at the last minute, through Amy's pleas for him to please save everyone, does he remember Maria's actual last words - that he was created to make a better world for humanity, and to protect them. Having a change of heart, he teams up with the rest of them to help stop the ARK, and in the end he sacrifices himself to save humanity.
He's had a few more plotlines after that, ranging from having an identity crisis and saving the world from an ancient race of aliens involved in his creation, to beating up some edgelord jackal and calling him weak (this causes to jackal to seethe so hard that it leads to the entire events of Sonic Forces), but SA2 will always be the greatest.

Ngl, SA2's autistic goofy plot with Shadow genuinely gave me sadfeels as a kid. So there's a part of me that still has an incredible soft spot for our resident edgelord, as well as his sad backstory. It's retarded but wholesome at the same time. Absolutely hate what they did with him in later games.

Saw the movie earlier today, it's alright but I genuinely think the first one had a better identity of it's own with how it tried to depict Sonic and Robotnik's origins differently.

Main issue I have with it is how it focuses on putting in as much game fanservice as possible rather than trying to explain/expand on possible lore stuff alluded to in the first movie, like Longclaw's fate. Unless I missed something, Longclaw was implied to have been captured by Knuckles' tribe and they went on to fight somewhere else, but Knuckles being the last one of his kind is never elaborated on properly, neither is that whole owls vs. echidna's bit to give Sonic something to wonder about Longclaw's past, Tails mentions a home planet and that never gets asked further about by Sonic when he brings it up and their friendship bonding is as basic as you expect it to be from the games' continuity.

I also legit thought that when Sonic and Tails got captured by GUN and 2 black woman went to save them that the movie got hijacked for 15 minutes and turned into a stereotypical black people comedy movie routine ala Big Momma's House. And who were those 3 Arbiter-looking dudes passing through the portal on the mushroom planet Robotnik Home Alone'd before he encountered Knuckles? Don't seem like echidna's to me.

TL'DR: Decent follow-up to the first film and alright if only caring for fanservice to the games rather than hoping for actual plot.
Legit sad we got Edge instead of Metal Sonic tho
