Sonic Movie Thread - From a Disastrous Teaser/Trailer to Not That Bad a Movie; Got a Sequel

I haven't watched the video and I'm too lazy to and I know this is a shitposty reply but it is kinda fucking wild how powerless people are against changes in media. Usually when a movie comes out the studio frames all critics as somehow racist or sexist or "alt right" to blanket the whole thing. Of all the fucking movies to be an anomaly where they actually go back and try to fix it after universal backlash, it's a fucking licensed CGI hedgehog movie with a on paper smurfs-esque premise of "character gets warped into the REEL WORLD IN MONTANA!" Then again the sonic X anime did something similar before the smurfs movie existed, but that's an anime, not a cgi movie with recognizable blue characters from a thing. My fucking point is it's fucking weird that this movie is the one they actually listened to universal hatred with a "huh we fucked up" kinda response.

It’s because the creepy human Sonic was an executive demand, and nobody on the creative team actually wanted to use that design. The backlash to the first trailer was used to convince the eggheads to scrap their god-awful idea and go with what the creators wanted to do in the first place.

Speaking of the redesign, I remember the animation team that had to redo everything for the movie had to be let go afterwards.

Did Sony re-hire them for this one? They honestly deserve another chance and more for all the crap they probably had to put up with and being able to undo such a horrendous design.

I would hope so, it's just that unfortunately, special effects studios close down all the time even if a movie they worked on actually win awards for it. Life of Pi's controversy, for instance, is due to how Rhythm & Hues was treated and forced to file for bankruptcy, but there was so much uncertainty in the industry given the recession that not even Life of Pi saved it from its cruel fate. It was only held on life-support until 2020.

Maybe Sony brought the team in for the sequel, maybe they didn't. 3D animators are, sadly, a dime a dozen at this point. You have to really stand out in your talent/work ethic to be considered irreplaceable/indispensible, and that's honestly hard to do with CGI since more often than not, it's done by an algorithm through the software. Most you really have to do is just implement key frame animations and make sure the rigging works, and the computer will practically do the in-betweens for you. In-betweeners at this point are mostly there to just tweak some frames and making sure it still looks smooth. The "look" is mostly because the director and art/animation director told the animators to make the models look and move a certain way.

Yeah, pretty much. I had the thing as a kid and i don't think I ever sold it so it's probably in some fucking box somewhere.

I also remember getting the robotnik one from a trade with another kid I don't think I even knew. Like just some weird random npc barter encounter between kids with fast food prize toys. The windup thing was broken because the mechanism inside was clogged with sand, but that shit didn't matter to me. I have an idea where that one is, unlike the knuckles one where it's only vague notions. It's either in a specific drawer or box and has been for over a decade.

I didn't know this because I still haven't gotten around to seeing this fucking movie yet, but Jim carrey's theme is actually very much like as close as possible to the DiC robotnik's themes without being the DiC robotnik's themes.

Also it sounds kinda like something out of a RARE/Rareware game but the same could be said for the original DiC robotnik themes. There was a remix of gruntilda's lair a few years ago that literally just put the AOSTH robotnik theme in there.

It looks like it'll be a great time for anyone and their families, that much is clear, and if this shit makes a lot of money, that's a win for people who want studios to actually listen to the audience (edit: not shippers and wokesters) and valid criticisms.

My only regret is that the movie still doesn't have a fat Eggman who wears the goggles more often,
but that's minor and at least the fat Eggbot and the stache more than makes up for it.
Although the Winter Solider line was pretty cringe.

The company that did it went under, but it wasn’t because of Sonic. The company was already in trouble and it had nothing to do with working to redesign the original version.

The original anime sonic movie does that aspect really fucking well, honestly. It also doesn't fullystick to the game lore with it's whole unmentioned but very clearly shown "post apocalyptic earth" setting called planet freedom instead of just taking place on normal earth. I know in recent years some fucking youtube anime reviewcriticsw have started acting like it's not good and never was but I really got to disagree on that. It's one of the few anime I can stand the english dub of.
Speaking of which,IIRC piracy or used copies is the only way to see that thing cause the company that made it literally fucking died and as far asI know nobody bought the rights to it. There's been HD rips of it on youtube for ages now, hopefully things stay that way whenever some fucking company yoinks the rights because I do NOT want to have to pay a fucking premium for what will probably be just a rip of a copyright flagged youtube video.

I mean, think about how little game stuff the Super Mario Bros. Super Show used. You had the cast from SMB2 and the occasional Fire Flower and that's basically it. The other two made more use out of the setting and objects (and baddies) so there I can't say much about that.

Come to think of it weren't they all DiC shows? It probably had something to do with a studio head or shit like that.

In the case of Sonic, it's partly due to the whole weird localization thing of framing earth as instead an alien planet called"mobius" because the localizers thought westerners wouldnt' understand or comprehend the facta gamelike sonic could take place on a stylized earth. You know, despite the fucking 30s style cartoons his design is based off all doing the ame thing and having a general huge surge in popularity in the 90s due to tv reruns . It's a very corporate bullshit kind of decision honestly and looking back it slightly pisses me off, but without it and it's effects we'd have never gotten Sonic Adventure 2 because one game prior they realized that whole shindig was fucking stupid they retconned it universally so that Eggman is his title/nickname and Ivo Robotnik is his real name. Bestof both worlds, You got bothe the Beatles reference of Eggman AND him actually having a family name that can be taken for a real person's name. Of course, the "GREEEN EYES!?! EARTH?? WHY NOT MOBIUS?!?" crowd was created partly due to this change but it was always fucking clear from the getgo sonic took placd on a fictionalized earth when his canonical birthplace is fucking Christmas Island. Eventually the 3d gamesstarting backpedalling on the sonic takesplace on earth thing to try to appeal to thesetypes but it amounts to doing shit like calling earth "sonic's world" like he owns the fucking place when he doesn't and it's literally visibly earth.

The only thing we got close to an animated adaptaton of the games was Fucking SonicX, which wasn't entirely like the games due to the world soniccomes from and modern day earth being different dimensions/timelines ala the mario brosmovie. but did brief small kindawarped story arc things based on the adventure games, and the OVA Which despite not being based on sonic canon as it's literally on a post apocalyptic earth wherethe american governmentis apperently the only surviving nation to the point the planet has literally been renamed"freedom" feels like it could feasibly be a game plot with how sonic goes through several reigons and setpieces.

My keyboard's shitting itself and I'm tired and rambling like fuck so let me just finish with something mildly yet completely unrelated before just conking out. Today I found something, that something being a 5 pack of small cheap figures for $20, and the jim carrey robotnik for $10. They have piss poor cheapo paint apps as you'd expect,but the sculpts are extremely detailed. Unfortunately despite being filled with windows the lighting in this house is complete dogshit unless I use the flash, and god damn it the flash wipes out so much detail only natural light can capture.

I'm genuinely excited for the sequel, still surprised to this day that I actually like the first movie very much. Its...how to put it, "refreshing" when you compared it to other movies that came out recently. I really hope the sequel can do much better than the first one

By virtue of what we've seen in the trailer and tv spots, it already seems to be doing better by putting less focus on the movie characters and more focus on the characters who are actually from the game. Just wish Eggman had replaced Stone with a robot or something. Otherwise its looking like it'll be a fun flick.

Sonic movie wasn't bad, but it feels like Beastmaster 2 or Masters of the Universe.

And the Smurfs movie... Or the Fat Albert movie... Or the Rocky & Bullwinkle movie, among others.

I personally tend to dislike this type of plot where 'famous fictional character comes to the real world and makes friends with a local human couple/kids and has to save the world while also helping to sort out their family issues' since it just feels incredibly lazy and repetitive and its cheaper to boot since most of it always takes place in New York. But I gave it a pass for this one because of how they were willing to actually listen to audiences by changing Sonic and featuring that clip of Eggman looking more like he does in the game (which was only shown in the ending and didn't carry over into the next movie outside the baldness and stache...) and I figured they would actually go for a proper game adaptation for the next one, which surprisingly they did. So I guess it paid off, but I really wish Hollywood would at least try not overusing this formula. Also out of all the uses of this Formula, Fat Albert was probably the weirdest but surprisingly meta.

One of the better uses of this formula was probably Last Action Hero since it was a parody rather than an adaptation that still delivers on an interesting plot with engaging characters even if it has a few hiccups.

Not gonna lie, really looking forward to this movie. I think I mentioned it earlier waaaay upthread (or in another?), I thought it’d be awkward hearing Idris Elba as Knuckles, because he’s older than Knux. He actually sounds fucking great. He gave him some gravitas.
