To be fair, my boy Knux was already a fusion of Australian and Jamaican, and according to the games, had Incan-ish ancestors. A black British guy is NOT uncanonical. I always envisioned Knux with that range of accent.

My only drawback, I feel like Idris might sound a little too old to be Knuckles. He’s supposed to be sixteen, after all. But not opposed to the choice. Eager to see it!
Knuckles is actually canonically older than Sonic, so it makes sense. He'll probably be the young adult to Sonic's increasingly less naive teenager.

I’m hoping for moments like this.

So why didn't they just have Roger Craig Smith voice Sonic in the movie?
Because movies with animated characters, regardless if the entire movie is animated or not, need to have celebrity voices for their characters. This isn't a new thing either, it dates back to at least the 80's, but now it's a lot more prominent. Being a professional voice actor really doesn't cut it for that purpose, except maybe for voicing a side character.

Pretty much. And that’s not to say that the celebrity voice can’t do a really good job with the character either. But Hollywood and investors and whatnot want brand recognition and such to draw peopel to the movie, so the big name actor will typically get the part over the person who’s voiced the character in games for years/decades.

I've never been sold on the worth of having random celebrities doing voice work in animated movies, at least for every main character, a big star who has is well cast can for sure help the box office but most aren't that. Let's take Shrek, Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy for sure helped the movie, but Cameron Diaz I would be shocked if she justified her paycheck. Most of these celebrity voice roles aren't because they fit the role, but because they are the most famous person they can afford for the role. See that why with a lot of cheap movies they market the fact they got Rob Schneider.

Rise of the Guardians, that movie had a cast of Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Jude Law, Isla Fisher, and Hugh Jackman, it lost $90 million, Meanwhile Coco a Pixar movie which didn't have any well know celebrities was a huge hit. If the audience like the look of the movie, an all-star voice cast doesn't matter.

The craziest ones are Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, they use sped-up voices, so why does matter who voices them, well to the studio it did, with a voice cast of actors like Justin Long, Christina Applegate, Amy Poehler and Anna Faris, adding millions to the budgets they really didn't need to spend in the first place.

It's just mostly a waste of money, but Hollywood loves to waste money.

This feels like we're getting into the real story, what should have featured more in the first film. Less pissing about with boring earthlings like Dolph Lundgren, more cartoon animals fighting egg obsessive Elon Musk.

"Do I look like I need your power?"

Oh Lord I'm sweating like a sinner in church.

What is it with the sudden boost in buff Knuckles as of late, anyway. He's had the baritone for a long while, but not the buff physique to match it until Sonic Boom.
I assume it's just to highlight the fact he's the strong one in the team. His voice isn't as bad as I was expecting, doesn't really sounds like Elba to me but I guess that's because he's not using his normal East End accent. I don't mind him being a little more hench than the others but I think Boom overdid it.

I was pretty pleased to see the military unit with the G patches, I'm assuming that's G.U.N. There's also the Tornado which is nice since I don't remember when we last saw that, some of the drones looked like Buzzbombers from Sonic 1 and the Chaos Emeralds are relevant for the first time since 2006 or whatever.

That being said I hope they do more than just reference the games, I don't want the whole movie to be "I saw it and I recognized it so I clapped" which is a fine line to walk in an adaptation.

This is honestly a really nice transition into the game lore, much like how Sonic 2 really made the series break out, although I hope it doesn't just rely on it too much. Robotnik is a great balance between Carrey's usual performance and a legitimate threat. I was expecting Knuckles to sound a bit rougher, but the baritone and his one-line delivery was spot-on! The trailer raised my already high hopes; maybe with the (cautiously :optimistic: ) possibility that it'll do better than the first given they listened to the fans. That's a rarity in itself as Hollywood's been creatively extinct for decades.
