Really nice, Jeff. Glad you have such nice things to say about Lowtax, when a couple of weeks ago on ResetEra you practically bragged about lowballing him since you took advantage of the goons getting outraged at him.

I would call Jeff the ultimate Shylock but it was revealed in the divorce thread that Jeff paid $450K for SA and I don’t think Shylock would of spent that much for a forum full of man children, troons, and furries. Jeff is just a retarded Shylock.

Skylark was unusual in that--at least while it was still okay in FYAD, I don't think it is anymore--he'd be mercilessly clowning on troons himself.

I've not really much SA watcher, but I would like to know: how much of Something Awful's, let's call 'left-wing turn', came from either:
  1. Outsiders coming over a 'take over' the site.
  2. An organic evolution of the SA userbase and consequently it's moderation team.
Just wondering, since many people talk about how (1) occured and it was Lowtax's fault, but I feel like (2) is more likely than people give credit for.

I'm not really sure that's where it began, but 2004 is when I remember people actually talking openly about how they hated Bush and Republicans leading up to his second term. I don't know if that's where it started, but it served as an opportunity for it, surely. In 2008 I remember a few members actually posting about how they had joined the Hillary or Obama campaigns as staff or volunteers. I remember seeing ads people bought that weren't funny but politically centered as well.

Most of what I remember from where I posted were groups of users getting together via offsite means and ganging up on people who didn't agree with them politically. They'd go around to different parts of the forums and even sometimes offsite. Following users around on different threads, shitting up their posts and replies, changing their avatars and titles. And it was always left-leaning people going after everybody else who they didn't like. My friends and I stopped going to SA and the forums around 2009. Our palettes were pretty soured by that stuff. That kind of behavior went on before, but it wasn't on that scale, wasn't about politics, and wasn't' that coordinated.

Lowtax hardly ever posted outside of FYAD. When he did, he always took offense to something inoffensive and innocuous that someone would reply or post with. Threads started by Lowtax would become mass banning threads, sometimes including some statement on why he hated all of us. In one of Null's streams he said that Lowtax came across as someone who couldn't take anything seriously, and he doesn't know how right he is. He just sat back collecting the paychecks from the forum and frontpage and totally ignored what was going on with the forums, the mods, and everything else. He build this whole machine and didn't understand something that Null eventually did: when you create something you have to defend it. Lowtax was just greedy and lazy.

People blame Lowtax because he was entirely to blame. It was always Lowtax wanting jannies who would curate his forums for him like a full time job while paying them below minimum wage (starting with Fistgrrl). This eliminated everyone from the pool of potential moderators except for people entirely dependent on leftist social programs like welfare and disability payments, as well as retarded college students. When they started to act on their political sensibilities and slowly purge anything right of center and then right of left, Lowtax did nothing. Once political opinions were quashed, the next step was humor that offended their politics. This took several years of sniffing out people and purging, but gradually not just the moderator team but the entire user base was culled to people who showed sufficient groupthink. Lowtax was warned this was happening, but out of laziness chose to do nothing over anything for over a decade, and eventually they succeeded in purging him as well.

Good riddance.

Quite specifically, and I'm sure I'm leaving things out so anyone feel free to add/correct:

--In like 2000-2001, the earliest main mods/admins, a cabal consisting of people like Al, jre, and Rainbow Blight, were lording it up and soaking up the power and cult of personality while Lowtax fucked off. They were overthrown by a new group led by Michelle Fistgrrl Trayne and Zach Elpintogrande Parsons

--Fragmaster ran things for awhile, he was chill, but Fistgrrl and Zach were huge powers throughout and appointed left leaning mods like Ozma(fat) and Greg Cugino (Tiny Fistpump). Zach was the one who banned "nigger" and started the exiles who formed SASS

--Ozma and Greg became admins and appointed people like Senior Woodchuck and the Catlady Crew. Zach and Michelle grew up (and grew rounder. Because they are fatties) and faded away. The newer mods became more leftist and shrill. The SJW and woke movement which infects the world had a major incubator in SA. The mods were actively encouraging mob activity like LF raids into GBS

--more "moderately" leftist mods and admins like The Finn, Ozma, Woodchuck, etc were pretty much in horror at what they had wrought as their golem got out of control and they quit the site or retreated to tiny corners like the soccer thread

--then at SS we doxxed all the major players and lol they all left

--as each successive generation of mods/admins left, the new ones were more thin-skinned, woke, shrill, and less powerful, ruling over a weakened user base. The trannys took over, going from being mocked, to tolerated, to running enemies off, to being lauded and handed the keys. Purity spirals over the years forced off more reasonable and moderate people, or they retreated to subforms or a few threads.
