I guess this is another "weird emotions as SA collapses in upon itself post"...
It's just a melancholy experience seeing the place that practically invented memes, which at the time were basically extremely nerdy and dumb in-jokes yet now turn up literally everywhere from your facebook feed to your company slack chats and twitter posts from your elected officials, fall to the same pussification that has squashed all humour in the internet and society at large. And ironically, they're not even real pussies.
To say that I'd been on there 18 years isn't a brag, it's actually kind of pathetic actually. Almost my entire adult life spent shitposting away with others whom I thought were carrying the flame of the sorta-libertarian-sorta-nihilist early internet into this dismal new era of a corporate/government/social justice ruled internet.
But yeah, it wasn't necessarily the goons themselves that killed the site but the shitty administration of it from about 2006 onward. I remember getting a bad feeling when BYOB was created and its posters started to get some clout (no offense to any former BYOB'ers here, some of you were alright). But that was sort of a turning point where decisions started to be made based on feels rather than "if you don't like it here get the fuck out". I recall some of them brigading in mod threads whining about people making "very un-byob posts in byob". It didn't take long before bans and thread closures started being handed out to anyone who intruded on their hugbox and upset them. As the "containment boards" or "fyad-lites" started to gain traffic this kept on repeating.
Coincidentally it was around this time that the cat-lady mod team and their white knights started running the show in the big subforums. You know, "Ice Mommy" and her like, and I don't think the spirit of the place has ever been the same. Yet a lot of us still stuck it out by digging into in those hobby or interest-specific subforums, trying to ignore the putrid smell coming from outside.
I've seen some fond recollections of helldump being shared in here, and while it did have its moments, I recall it differently. That seemed to be another turning point where turbosperg goons with political or ideological chips on their shoulders began essentially running background checks on other posters and doxing them and nagging the mods into banning anyone who failed their test. Some saw this as A Good Thing, but I still think this is when some of the funnier posters and long-running good threads were tossed out on some perceived infraction they might have made at some time outside of the forums. Consequently it turned off potential new regs or other existing posters from trying to take up the slack in content, lest they be "outed" in some spectacular dramabomb fashion. Post-helldump this carried on with different factions of goons on the offsite splinter-forums, IRC groups, discord groups, etc constantly scrutinizing everyone and then running off anyone who wasn't perfect by whining to their token mods. And here we are today.
ANYWAY...that's just my take on it and admittedly it could be a bad one because once I got out of college and trying to survive the great recession I sort of checked out and just lurked some bookmarked threads from time to time. But this latest troon drama and the pathetic capitulation and self-censorship/site erasure to them by the admins instead of you know, simply permabanning all of their bitch asses got me kinda heated and thinking back to the fond memories I had of the place while being reminded of exactly how this was all so painfully predictable long ago. At the very least, it's all been amazing to watch the painfully slow trainwreck of the SA forums and I found this place in the progress. Peace.

My biggest issue with SA isn't necessarily ANY interest in social justice (real social justice, not 'listen to anyone calling themselves a minority' social justice) but that every unfunny fat white shut in incel mad at everyone for their own stink decided to co-opt being a minority in any fucking way they can. Before everything settled on "I'm a girl now teehee" we went through the odd moron claiming to actually be another race (aaahcktually I am 51% black/latino/native american) and then when white knighting "m'lady" shit didn't work they decided to take over the transgender demographic and muscle in on women that way.
Enabled by supposedly Correct mods/staff it has of course gone as far as being "the wrong type" of minority for anyone that disagrees, turning any negative sentence/word/phrase into some form of bigotry, because hurt feels can only be bigotry and if it turns out you're trans and disagreeing, "well, you can be a self hating trans/bigoted minority" and the poor sap gets banned/probed anyway. Anyone with an account should check out TGRS and how they're running ANYONE out that they suspect isn't exactly the right kind of troon regardless of the post. Someone got sixered for sharing a charity link and encouraging the trans posters to reach out if they need stuff. They even sixered a bunch of "cis" people for posting nice messages, then later started posting about how TGRS isn't very welcoming lmao
The worst thing that happened to the internet was when these shut in psychos figured out all you have to do is yell "racist/bigot/misogynist" at otherwise well meaning people and they'll shit themselves to prove they're not for fear they get tarred with that brush or lose their fucking job.

I dont know if this has been covered before, but in the goons payday 2 discord there was this one guy named chairface who would openly talk about diving into water near bridges and roadways to recover firearms dumped there. He would then refurbish them and sell them to anyone who couldnt get one legally because "fuck the facist government". I always found that entertaining.
I remember the war thunder discord when this came out, it was basically autistic screeching in almost all the channels. Several of us just posted lol and moved on with our day but sweet jesus some of the stuff in the HOI4/paradox discord MAPGOONS is just unbelieveable.
I've had my SA account because a buddy paid lowtax the tithe many years ago. only ever lurked in the games section but that even became unbearable several years ago, this thread and what a dumpster fire SA has become finally encouraged me to post here. Maybe i could find some stuff from the disparate discords for your amuzement.

Everybody (especially the mods) knows Aatrek's story, but Morally Inept was generally just another annoying goon up until he made a post in the "fucked up things you did as a teenager" thread. Everyone else in the thread was just posting about stupid, banal shit they did when they were stupid kids; Morally Inept came in all "well you see i had this female dog and um well uh you know well see i um hehehehehehe"
He won a custom title almost immediately, linking to the post in which he confessed to raping his dog. He paid to change his custom title many times, only to see it return. He edited out the post, but it had already been quoted many times. The consequence was that every time Morally Inept posted in any thread, it immediately derailed into "hey morally inept why did you rape your dog." He tried being cute about it, he tried being smug about it, he tried being defensive and self-righteous about it, nothing worked. It still took years for him to finally be permabanned, though.

I've felt similar for spending around a decade there, but I just chalked it up to having nowhere else to go. I would have left much sooner had KiwiFarms been around in like 2010. Then again, so many things had layers and layers of dumb irony so thick that it became impossible to tell who was being sincere with increasingly crazy posting. Like once I remember poking fun at some random fetish someone posted about, and someone replied to me with "pls don't kinkshame", which I figured was a new meme or something and just carried on shitposting and ended up eating a week's probation.
It was always pretty fucking gay that the rules on SA were ultra strict, but I went along with them for a while because at least it wasn't fucking GameFAQs, but by then I could already see all sense of humor being sandblasted off the forums. And this was like a decade ago. Was this not the forum known for bringing furries to task, for pointing and laughing at their weird, deviant ways?
Yeah, I did that too. I tended to stay out of GBS for most of my time there and just stuck to Games and Serious Hardware/Software Crap. Games was always rife with some serious consoomers that'd give Reddit a run for its money, but I never knew of a better place to actually talk about games that wasn't overrun with retards.

Lowtax will never move the forums to modern software like xenforo because:
1. It's way too expensive to do it right if he wants everyone migrated.
2. If he just closed the current forum and started a new fresh one a lot of people might not come back or someone could just create their own and encourage everyone to join and tell lowtax to fuck off.
