These girls are a bit over the top, but I understand why they do it.
Unfortunately, there is still an assumption that female rape victims who are "sluts" are somewhat responsible for the assaults they suffer. There is still the assumption that a loose woman or a "slut" is a bad and shameful thing to be.
I feel that by proudly identifying as "sluts" these girls are affirming that all women, no matter how promiscuous are worhty of dignity and respect and definitly don't deserve to be raped.
That being said, they do give the impression of being disobedient, church-skipping jezebel hussies.
But they do have some good points as well.
I don't disagree with these points as core concepts... but the problem I have with the likes of SlutWalk is that their rhetoric makes it
impossible to discuss actually reducing the risk of rape. There are ways to empower women to make themselves less likely to be raped... sticking with a friend in large crowds, learning self-defense, being careful about alcohol or drugs, and so on. These are all things women can choose to do (or not do) and they should have the right to decide for themselves if altering their behavior is worth the tradeoff in risk. At the very least, they should know these choices are there.
However, SlutWalkers won't listen to this. To them, the only way to reduce rape is to TELL MEN NOT TO RAPE, which is, I'm sorry, complete and utter horseshit. Men.... all men... know they shouldn't rape. The problem is
some of them don't give a shit and do it anyway. Until these SlutWalkers acknowledge this fact and push for changes that take this into account, I cannot take them seriously. Their whole mindset is that men are programmed by society to rape, and that flashing their boobies is somehow the answer to that, and if you disagree, you're VICTIM BLAMING. No, just no.
So yes, they have some valid points, but they have an equal number of really bad ideas.
