"They look like a porcelain doll" ...Have you considered maybe that's what they were going for? I'll give them that bishie Balan isn't the most interesting design or anything, but it's pleasant to look at, it's cohesive. Balan is a little clown-like, so maybe the white skin and eye paint is supposed to be evocative of those porcelain clown or jester dolls.
The problem isn't usually the base colors they choose, it's that they don't know how to properly shade it (or they don't bother). Dark skin reflects light much more than pale skin.
In a cartoonish flat style, though, you have to accommodate for that lack of detailed lighting somehow... I don't draw that way so I don't know how exactly, but the lack of highlights on such a dark skintone with dark lineart makes everything blend together and become indistinct.
Anyway, here's some things I saw recently.
This is supposed to be Stein from Soul Eater... Where's the screw in his head? The glasses?

Or he could just be a huge asshole that still loves his friends/family, with various traits of the Japanese 'Bad Boy' all-boy's school gangster type trope, who never change out of their uniforms so they can always be identified to rival schools (along with the fact that a lot of Japanese men are reluctant to show personal emotions at all, even to lovers). The west can't really understand those things fully, so slaps him with autism. Plus, I feel like most people would snap if a bunch of schoolgirls didn't leave them alone for even a second once spotted.

This take is probably more suited to the SJW thread proper, but I hate how these types speak over minorities, and when a person of the minority they're speaking over contradicts them, they turn around and claim that person can't speak for all of them... like the recent Hilichurl kerfuffle in Genshin Impact's twitter community.

Rules for thee not for me my dude. Remember gotta be the savior because those "ding dang minorities dunno better no no lemme teach u minority even tho u know more than me i must be da savior uwu" that's their thought processess.
It reminds me of a twitter post where a black woman was "I don't support this as a black woman who does etc" and this white woman was like "actually your informed and don't get a right to speak" or something like that.
Hell as a minority myself I just gave up trying to argue. I don't use social media or bother to speak up bout stuff since I know i'm "honorary whitey" and I don't get rights because I don't fall into the "right think" that these people WANT me to be in. I'm sure it sucks for others who DO want to speak up but they get silenced so much they just give up and then SJWS whine why don't we speak up. You bitches are the REASON we don't bother.
