Also, for all the preaching tumblr does about accepting disabilities, it's funny that they chose to prioritize making Duster gay over his permanent limp aside from having slightly bent his leg.

The thing is, making Dipper trans (male) is a very common thing to do in the fandom, especially on Tumblr. There is an entire tag dedicated to this after all, and apparently it has always been treated as a "plausible" theory due to episodes such as Dipper Vs. Manliness (being, of course, so blatantly misinterpreted as Tumblr folk see "transness" on everything). This also happens to cartoon child characters that are not blatantly masculine such as Danny Phantom and Timmy Turner.
So, to respond to your question, yes but they don't care.

I could usually excuse the redesigns as just being a different vision if 1. They weren't so preachy and had the "I'M the right one here" attitude and 2. Didn't look like the characters went Goodwill fishing.

So basically these are completely different characters? Seriously just do OCs inspired by the show instead. I have done this and it's fun. They often aren't that good but it's still fun to think about.
When watching Avatar TLA book 1 and 2 one thing that kept popping into my head was that how do benders of different origins function in "wrong" nations especially in fire nation. Why would they be living there instead of their proper nation, what side would they be on, what they feel about the war and so fort. While thinking about it, I made a water bender and a earth bender that were part of the fire army.
The water bender is an adopted son of fairly high ranking ex fire general and his wife that teaches fire bending to rich kids. He is pretty idealistic and super friendly but his parents have tried to mold him into someone that can survive both battles and socially, especially after he turned out to be a water bender. He joined the army for love of his country and has managed to get some success but only kinda. Do him being a water bender higher ups don't trust him but he is also from a well known rich high class family, a hard worker and hasn't shown signs of disloyalty, so they essential cave him busy work position. He leads group of dumb rich kids and other trouble makers that the army can't really kick out but who they don't want messing up actual work. They are assigned patrolling inside Fire nation and other helpful but not crucial grind work that isn't too demanding or demeaning for kids of important people that can raise fuzz. He is well aware what his position is all about but is still terminated to do a good job. He is actually a pretty good team leader and has unique fighting style that uses water bending filtered trough fire bending techniques.
One of member of his team is my earth bender. She is a daughter of a clan master builders that miss calculated at started of the war. Their family was well know for making the best luxury houses and gardens using a lot of earth bending among other techniques. To expand markets they had relocated to Fire nation little time before the war broke out and decided to wait it out assuming that would just minor max few years long conflict. They saw no reason to take sides and loose any valuable customers, so concentrated on becoming even better builders they already were. As whole thing turned out be bigger deal they took even stronger position of not taking sides beyond what makes customers happy and being loyal to the family. They have managed to make this work primary by having so many rich customers and being one of the great old luxury brands that is know world over. The family follows strict code of behavior towards outsides and know multiple unique earth bending techniques that are all about making impressive buildings. My earth bender is first one of her clan to join into any army and is seen as kinda black sheep by the family for this. She had become friends with my water bender after his family order a new training building for his mother's fire bending school. When he joined in the army she wanted to follow him to keep him safe as she didn't trust fire army to treat a water bender fair. So she isn't loyal to fire nation but is loyal to him and doesn't cause any trouble. Do how she was raised she extremely polite and tends keep her distance. She a good earth bender but isn't very used using it as a fighting tool, but luckily do their team being mainly rich kid baby sitting service this isn't too big of issue.

Looks like non-straight sexuality/trannyism is higher on their "need to be validated!" scale than disabilities.
