Also, writing this for the others to avoid confusion. DSP here means Deep-Sea Prisoner, a nickname of the Japanese person to whom that character belongs to. Not DarkSydePhil.

It's just that when DSP's chars don't have "canon" skin colors I really could care less if people give them different skin colors as long as actual effort is put into it (e.g. the Wadda above making her "more" sea-themed). As opposed to a bland drawing of her that would be the same design, but with black skin.
My point about the ashy skin though was mainly that when DSP DOES give his characters real skintones, the shades he uses are rather dull, and I'd put the ashiness of the skin in that redesign on the count of the official style

D-SP drawing some characters with the white skin of a different tone doesn't make the pale white ones "raceless white", unless D-SP stated otherwise. That tone of the skin also fits many characters of theirs, because its a part of their animal forms (e.g. sharks and killer whales). Its not the same as with Frisk from Undertale who is yellow like a Simpsons character, so you can toy around with their skin color when it comes to fan work. Another problem with that redesign is while clothing itself seems good, she just doesn't even look like a Funamusea/Japanese media character anymore, but a character from modern Western cartoons.

I haven't seen any horribly bad Pretty Cure Tumblr fanarts/headcanons yet so there is hope. Also the Tokyo Mew Mew Tumblr-fandom wasn't horrible either, these are the only questionably bad stuff I have found but otherwise it's mostly pretty tame.

The first person that drew the shitty mspaint raiden, named Etoile or Famicon, is pretty infamous on the mgs tumblr and discord groups.
Mostly because of their inappropriate behaviors with minors

And for drawing vague piss kink drawings

I think, at least part of it, has to do with shame. They know they've got some nasty secrets or w/e and feel all self-loathing about it so they throw themselves into feel-good SJW politics to pretend to be this high and mighty whosoever so they can project this image of NOT being a shameful freak. Kinda like when IRL politicians lobby aggressively anti-gay politics then get caught sucking off a twink in the bathroom at Chili's
