Art quality isn’t that bad but oh boy do they miss point of Death Notes character designs. Light is supposed come across as someone who has everything going for him: young, good looking, organized and has style sense. L other hand looks mentally and physically on edge: sickly, pale, childish, low efford and wierd. Their looks contrasts their actions, abilities and morals, witch made them memorable characters and served the tone of the series very well.
This by the way was huge problem for me in the Netflix adaptation. I don’t mind race bending when a story is moved to new environment. Often it’s both practical and can serves storytelling better but you need keep in mind what the characters supposed present and what cliches and/or emotions they are meant provoke. This is why they couldn’t have chosen worse character to turn black than L, because him being extremely pale was very deliberate and important for his design. He is sheet white because it makes him look very sick, like he has never been outside and brings attention to his dark eyes (he is always watching). You can’t really really create that mood without someone being pale and preferably dark haired.
Otherhand if they had gone making Light black that would have worked just fine. Light just needs stand out positively, look handsome and well put together, absolutely doable with right casting and clothing. They could have even used the new race to serve the story, have American race relations serve as part of why Light feels justified going on his killing spree. Light after all does think he’s better than everyone else anyway why not add some lowkey rasicm to that. For blacks because all they do is swallow in past wrongdoing and see him as race traitor for being black, academically successful and upper class, for whites because justice system (witch is why he needs take over), latinos for so involved with all sorts of criminal activity, asians being seen as perfect minority and so on. This doesn’t have to be avert just some off hand comments or background elements like his school having BLM posters.

Honestly why tho? What's the purpose other then "I'm ugly,fat,hairy,smelly and trans and I'm projecting my insecurities on a character" I really hope these people are just hobbyists or something cause art like this is absolute garbage and will never make it in the industry seeing their art makes me feel better about mine tbh
