I think it would have been pretty funny and maybe a little bit clever if they drew a regular person just standing there for their depiction of someone with autism. You know, because autistic people are just regular people. But I guess a subtle and dignified representation would have been too much to ask for from these people.
I think the main thing with people who do things like overblow traits to the point of being insulting is that it's the only way they know how to represent the group they're trying to get brownie points with.
These kids are generally the kinds of people who don't actually have exposure to the people they try to represent in their art (like white kids who live in majority white areas), so of course they're going to try and snag those brownie points without any actual knowledge of who they're trying to represent.
It's majority guilt and a need for attention mixed into one cringy combination.
