Do these people see the world the same way that we do? Because this goes beyond AUs and race headcanons and all of that. When the characters aren't recognizible even when we're told who they're supposed to be it's just.... Ew.

Also it's sad to see the age of some artists that get posted here. Before, in the deviantart days, shitty art could be excused because most of it was made by kids and teens who didn't know any better nor could handle criticism. Now, on tumblr, it's made by whiny and virtue signaling (or fetichists, your pick) older teens and grown ups adults who have a perfect little hugbox to praise their shitty and/or stupid art.

I used to know this artist. We ran in the same L4D2 and Homestuck circles together, almost a million years ago.

I have no idea what happened. They used to be really good. :(
 
It's just because Japanese/Koreans, the countries who make the pop culture they love, tend to be paler than the South East Asian countries nobody gives a shit about. It's like race-bending white characters in a show where there's already black characters.

The yellow skin stereotype thing is seen a lot in WW2 anti-Japanese propaganda. From observation I think East Asians do tend to have olive/yellow undertones to their skin (tanned or pale or otherwise) but obviously that ain't a rule. Stereotyping negatively exaggerates this.

I definitely agree. I remember in my first year in art class, we had Asian in my classroom. One day, one of the class assignment we had to do self portrait with dull light. Depends of type of light bulb, you noticed your skin is not pure black and brown, but tones of orange, s and red. However if with my Asian classmate, her skin looks yellow. I was mindblown but same time she was first expose of a REAL Asian people.

Funny bonus, that Asian classmate colored herself yellow.:story:
