I was in the poetry section at a used bookstore when I came across this book covered in Sanpaku eyes authored by 'Nick Demske'. Intrigued, I opened it to read the introduction, which starts with 'Judge' citation that is just niggerbable saying he is a good boy. The back cover has a letter from Paul Ryan on US House letterhead, congratulating 'Nick Demsky' for winning some poetry award in 2010.

So I flip open to a random page.

Let's try another.

Basically, is there any saving modern poetry? Or is it all just piss Christ and Hunter Biden painting with feces level pretentiousness that is supposed to suck?

"Tweet tweet," says the trans-species butterfly.
"Moo," says the dog who identifies as a cow.

- "poetry" from Clown World

O Realm of Delight!
O Land of azure, of Light, of Youth and Happiness!
I saw you once in dreams.

- poetry before Clown World

this is offensively bad lol. I'm not one to shit on modern art or literature just because it's different from the old shit, but this in particular, this is extremely fucking bad. I would love for an actual modern art critic to explain to me how this could possibly be considered good on any level.

E: okay I went and looked up the actual US poet laureate, the guy with approximately a gorillion awards who has been specifically named the literal Top Poet in America. I know credentials don't mean anything anymore but, fuckin, just read this shit:

Black Center

Green tips of tulips are rising out of the earth—

you don’t flense a whale or fire at beer cans

in an arroyo but catch the budding

tips of pear branches and wonder what

it’s like to live along a purling edge of spring.

Jefferson once tried to assemble a mastodon

skeleton on the White House floor but,

with pieces missing, failed to sequence the bones;

when the last speaker of a language dies,

a hue vanishes from the spectrum of visible light.

Last night, you sped past revolving and flashing

red, blue, and white lights along the road—

a wildfire in the dark; though no one

you knew was taken in the midnight ambulance,

an arrow struck a bull’s eye and quivered

in its shaft: one minute gratitude rises

like water from an underground lake,

another dissolution gnaws from a black center.

apparently modern poetry consists mainly of abusing forced metaphors in an attempt to sound profound. maybe the artform really is cooked. anyway, here's some poetry I actually enjoy:

I’ll will say as a catch all post that anything created or “assisted” with AI is garbage. Even if lyrically sound, it’s a homunculus spawn with no connection to the human heart and feeling.
Even when people use it for 'filler' like the background images in a YouTube video I'd rather they just steal stock images, draw their own doodles in MS Paint, or just use nothing.
Music is even worse since there's 1000s of great royalty free tracks out there.

I guess people like Rupi Kuar are as close to 'background poetry' as we'll ever get.

Using my superior, God given Media Literacy skills, I can deduce this one thing:

The dog identifying as a cow is really just a metaphor for how all trannies are cows and/or mutts. The later part of the cow being slaughtered represents TTD.

Like other forms of artistry, "modern" poetry suffers due to the poet not having any major life experiences to draw off of (most of them living in a larger city and going to college). Combine that with said people trying to sound smarter than they are (looking at the first poem using pulchritudinous while the rest of the poem is using more basic verbage), along with not seeming to follow any form of prose, makes everything rather clunky and devoid of enjoyment, but rather a masturbatory session.

These read to me as actually intending to make fun of how stupid contemporary poetry is, basically printed shitposts, though that may be overly optimistic. Regardless, they're more entertaining than 99% of the contemporary poems I've read.

@User names must be unique, you're right, and the only reason anybody reads poetry is to goad other poets into reading and writing blurbs about how good your poetry is. It's all a social game competing for the limited number of grants, fellowships, teaching positions, etc.

It does have some form of prose, it's just that the poet added all these random retarded line breaks and white space.
(I plugged it into suno to try to get a metre reference, but you can hear the prose better in it than by just reading.)

the geometry of silence

i swallowed a
vowel
this morning.

it tasted like
dust
and
generational
regret.

look at the
white space
between
this line

and
this
line.

that is where
the trauma
lives.

i am not writing
a poem.
i am
curating
the absence
of
n o i s e.

do you feel it?
the violence
of the
lowercase?

peel
the
metaphor.
eat the
skin.

remorse.

of course I am

hoarse.

Bam! The truck hit me

Waahhh waahhh waahhh! The ambulance come get me

Hot sticky sweaty
Birth

Hot cold stank
Death

The brain bone
Is connected to
The heart bone
The life bone
Is connected to
Your Bone.
We Bone.
