Disaster Sheffield students paid to tackle racist language on campus

A university is to hire 20 of its own students to challenge language on campus that could be seen as racist.

The University of Sheffield is to pay students to tackle so-called "microaggressions" - which it describes as "subtle but offensive comments".

They will be trained to "lead healthy conversations" about preventing racism on campus and in student accommodation.

Vice-chancellor Koen Lamberts said the initiative wanted to "change the way people think about racism".

The students will be paid £9.34 per hour as "race equality champions", working between two and nine hours per week to tackle "microaggressions" in the university.

These are described as comments or actions which might be unintentional, but which can cause offence to a minority group.

It gives examples of what it means by microaggression - such as:

  • "Stop making everything a race issue"
  • "Why are you searching for things to be offended about?"
  • "Where are you really from?"
  • "I don't want to hear about your holiday to South Africa. It's nowhere near where I'm from"
  • "Being compared to black celebrities that I look nothing like"

Rather than being about controlling people's speech, the university says it is "opening up a conversation".

It says the equality roles are being created in response to demand from students, training them how "to help their peers understand racism and its impact".

"We think it's important to be open and honest about racism," said Prof Lamberts.

A report last autumn from the Equality and Human Rights Commission warned that racism was a "common occurrence" for some students, with incidents of name-calling, physical attacks and racist material on campus.

The equality watchdog said that universities did not want to face up to the scale of the problem because of fears it could harm their reputations.

Not a republican, but ok.

Dude, that's the joke. I knew someone like that at a previous job and God damn was she insufferable. "Society finally cares about minorities" LOL yeah sure. She'd probably whine about clapping at a DSA meeting or something if she went, she was seriously that delusional. Probably the doings of her loony college instructors though, I think she was going into sociology or something?

I went to college myself, but that was before the social justice apocalypse that ruined it for sane people.

"Hey, why are people getting shoved in lockers? I didn't think that was a college thing... what could have caused this? "

Are college lockers even large enough for their students to fit?

I love that the writer was lazy enough to format that last one as if it's also a quote from a micro-aggressor. "I hate being compared to black celebrities that I look nothing like. I'm not a wigger!"

Britain really is a vordrakian hellhole.
I posted in another thread and i don’t understand that country at all. The tabloids are trashing the royal family and being extremely racist yet on the flip side they’re scared shitless for calling a man in a dress male or offending immigrants.

When the only racism you experience is "microagressions", you are doing well. There is still actual racism out there. But these kids don't move in those kinds of circles so they've never experienced it. The only racism they personally know is that some people said some things that kind of offended them or hurt their feelings. So what? Everyone has moments like that. A person making an offhand comment about women might irk you. Complaining about liberals will make you angry if you're liberal. Jokes about white flags if you are French. Comments about religious nuts if you happen to believe in God. Anything can be a microagression about any group. Why is it that only the race microaggressions that matter?

These kids need to be taught that people say dumb and hateful things all the time. If you let yourself be destroyed by it, they win. If you ignore them and become successful in your life, you win. Whining and having hissy fits 1) doesn't change a bigot's mind and 2) only hurts yourself. Stop wasting time on people who do not matter and focus on your education.

This is lefties getting jobs for young supporters, and training them in socially acceptable ways to get people to embrace lefty platforms. While some of it will be snitching on righties who powerlevel, most of it will be persuasion and organizing. That says nothing of them literally getting paid to go about their normal existence.

This is why the left wins.

Rather than being about controlling people's speech, the university says it is "opening up a conversation ". So a bunch of dorks go around reporting people for wrong speech with unexplained consequences for people caught saying wrong speak isn't controlling speech..checks out.

The only types of students that will do this are those who hope to work for the university student union branch. Having dealt with these types before only a few years ago, I can say with confidence they will be absolutely fucking useless and ineffective.

"change the way people think about racism"

You know, this sort of behavior has changed the way I think about racism, just not in the direction I think these people want it to go. It isn't even a hate thing, why deal with being in a "diverse" community?

Stay in a racially homogenous community, and people can still be assholes in any number of ways, but race-baiting is one less irritating thing off the list of shit you have to deal with.
