🐱 ‘She-Hulk’ Is Getting Review-Bombed Even Harder Than ‘Ms. Marvel’

This is one of those things I just knew was going to happen because you could see it coming from a mile away. She-Hulk attracted controversy ahead of release for its digital effects in trailers, but past that, happens to be an MCU show directed by, written by, produced by and starring women. And as such, it’s being review bombed with a flurry of one-star reviews here on launch day, almost identically to what happened with Ms. Marvel, and what has not happened to the same extent with other MCU series.

In fact, this is actually worse than what happened with Ms. Marvel. All I have to do is consult the last article I wrote about this, which shows what review bombing actually looks like, where it’s taking place on IMDB, which only takes user scores into account, unlike Rotten Tomatoes which splits critics and users.

Back when I wrote how this was happening to Ms. Marvel, here were the percent of reviews that were 1 star for all the other MCU shows:

• Loki – 1.5%
• WandaVision - 2.2%
• Hawkeye – 1.5%
• Moon Knight – 4.8%
• What If…? – 2.1%
• Falcon and the Winter Soldier – 3%
• Ms. Marvel – 22.2%

Ready for the She-Hulk figures? Yeah, so:

• She-Hulk – 35.8%

Yes, more than a third of all reviews for She-Hulk are 1 star, which makes its current IMDB score 5.4 out of 10, the lowest of all the MCU series. Ms. Marvel is still at a 6.2 with 19.9% 1 star reviews, so it’s not like IMDB every really goes and tries to sort through these kinds of bombing campaigns. And as I posted last time, here’s what this curve looks like for a “just okay” series like Falcon and the Winter Soldier that no one is bombing


On Rotten Tomatoes it’s less severe. She-Hulk has a 90% critic score with 255 reviews in and 77% audience score, which isn’t great (it’s the lowest among MCU shows at the moment), but it’s not as intensive of a bombing run as what’s being shown on IMDB.

All anyone has is their opinion, of course, but there’s a difference between a show or movie reviewing worse than average, and a literal flood of one star reviews that are incredibly disproportionate compared to every other show except for Ms. Marvel.

After having watched the first episode this morning, I’d say the complaints about CG are mostly moot now, as things look a lot better in the live show than they did in the trailers. I also thought the comedy and fourth wall-breaking worked, but I’m certainly curious to see more and how the show develops now that Jennifer is back in lawyer mode.

So yes, as ever, this kind of review bombing is incredibly childish and stupid. She-Hulk may not end up being the greatest MCU series ever, sure, but what’s happening here is not reflective of its quality whatsoever, and is yet another embarrassing comic book media fandom moment.

The worst part is that A. She-Hulk's origin is kind of perfect for the concept (Jen gets hot by the mob for defending a rival mobster and gets a blood transfusion from Bruce) and they fucked that up and B. She-Hulk is the perfect PG-13 alternative to Deadpool that Disney probably craves given that toning down Deadpool will inevitably piss off that film series fanbase.

She-Hulk is also a VERY SEX POSITIVE character and who among other things, has a native american boyfriend (Wyatt Wingfoot) and retired veteran super heroine as an assistant (Blonde Phantom IIRC) and a dad who's a retired police officer.

You could easily combine Savage She-Hulk with Byrne's Sensational She-Hulk if you wanted to, but instead they want the ironically anti-SJW Slott She-Hulk (which is built around Jen being slut shamed to the max and is basically Slott's rejected lawyer tv pilot spec script show he wrote after binge watching Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law).

And hell, you could even do the Cinderella esque take on the subject and explore something that has come up only in recent years: that gamma radiation induced mutations are based upon your repressed true self. From not to hot and how that affects Jen while Banner struggles to deal with Jen's transformation being radically different from his.

For all their whining about how they're oppressed and how the patriarchy keeps them down, they are really very privileged in all sense of the world.

I really would've liked a good she-hulk show.
Imagine if it got good enough (and FUCKING SHOWED ACTUAL SUPERHERO COURT CASES FUCKSSAKE) that it created a crossover with pheonix wright.

And then the true phase 4 of MCU happens. Marvel VS Capcom (minus infinite or unfuck it. pls).

In the comics it makes sense. Banner took the full gamma hit and his power scales with his rage. She-Hulk got a knock on hit from a blood transfusion. She's less powerful but more in control. They have at times boosted her to She-Maam, and its always been awful.

Wasn't this before the true source of their powers came from got revealed, a weirdass anti-creator god entity working through M A G I C radiation that has a fetish for making dr jekyll and mr hyde psychological golems or some shit wherein their repressed emotions gets a physical form?
And for banner it was a kaleidoscope of repressed psychological problems while for womanner it was insecurity thus CONFIDENT WOMAN.

Francesca Gailes: Worked on adult Punky Brewster and The Tick
Jacqueline Gailes: Also worked on Punky Brewster and I'm assuming sister to the other Gailes, along with some show called On My Block that looks to be a Netflix black show
Melissa Hunter: Wrote for Maya and Marty (which looks like a worse version of SNL) and Santa Clarita Diet
Kara Brown: Mostly worked on a Network show called In The Dark
Then finally you have Zeb Wells: Actual comic book writer who has done work on Robot Chicken

As far as streaming Punky Brewster was a Peacock original, On My Block was some bullshit for Netflix, The Tick was on Amazon Prime, and Santa Clarita Diet was an alright show on Netflix.

So the only Network TV writers involve Pickle Rick, Robot Chicken and In The Dark and Maya and Marty if you want to count that. She-Hulk mostly looks like a comedic character, but they stacked the writers room with a bunch of female snarky drama writers while including one guy that can explain some of the comic book elements.

This is seriously the quality of comedic writers that were brought onto this show.

I actually did watch the first episode. I went into it with low expectations, and boy, did it meet them. I'm really growing weary of the "new woman hero who's a dollar store version of big name man hero, but who's better than big name hero in every way immediately" trend we're seeing. But, I guess it's sexist to call mediocre slop what it is if it stars a woman

Lots of women are watching this show, right? I mean, it's got representation and everything, and I hear that draws viewers by the millions.
