If I remember correctly, during Nick's appearance on Anime Matsuri's stream - he mentioned that after the YellowFlash/Cody stream he had near the beginning of his involvement, Vic reached out to him for help retaining good counsel.

Doesn't really matter why he got counsel anyway since he had sufficient reason to sue.

Nick approached Vic with the thought of having him on his show, after speaking to him and doing a little digging he suggested Vic get legal representation.

It is speculated he left the firm over the weekend to become a partner at a new firm. He was removed from KC website over the weekend. He was not a named partner at that firm.

That's what he said in the Anime Matsuri stream, however, in the Yellowflash/Gator/AnimeOutsiders stream about Vic, Nick said that he reached out to Vic the day before and invited him to come on his show. Vic said he couldn't make it, but gave Nick a short statement that he could read.

Nick initiated contact with Vic and probably said that he had a case, if he wanted to sue. Nick then referred him to Ty Beard and setup the GoFundMe. It's hard to make the claim that Vic was lead astray or whatever by a predatory internet lawyer when said lawyer helped raise $177,000 and counting to fund his legal defense. That's the exact opposite of a grift.
