edit: for those of you saying it will bomb.... people are, somewhat predictably, eating this shit up.

also, somewhat less-predictably, and horrifyingly, it seems this is a show aimed at teens? IT DOESN'T AFFECT YOU, they said...

It's just going to devolve into "im a True and Honest™ TROOOOOON" within 3 episodes, mark my words.

They cancelled awesome shows like Lilyhammer for bullshit like Dear White People, Patriot Act, Sex Education and Chelsea. In the immortal words of Maffew and Jim Cornette's face:

Lilyhammer got canned because van Zandt wanted to go back on tour. Still bullshit though.

Dead thread, I know, but S3 just came out and I wanna know if anyone watches this show

Yeah its cringe and all, but I watched S1 and 2 on a whim and the characters grew on me a little bit. Its got all the IdPol representation stuff that plagues modern media, but the writers remembered to actually write characterization for once. Gay best friend is gay, but his stuff is more about his relationship with his dad (who, for once, is not a homophobic boomer and is simply afraid that bad stuff is going to happen to his kid) and his community (his family is very religious, but they are not gay bashers). Bully guy is a bully, but his stuff is about him having trouble communicating and being in the closet. Jock guy is a jock, but hes actually a really cool dude whos just trying to be nice to everyone. So on and so forth.

I was actually pretty invested leading up to the release of S3, i guess I would call the show a guilty pleasure of mine, but my enthusiasm is dying pretty fast. They introduced a new Karen headmistress character that is trying to turn the school into a "homophobic concentration camp". They introduced a non binary black girl whose only personality trait is that she uses "they/them" and whose only purpose in the story is to be opressed. Characters stop to literally explain stuff to the audience all the time. "Gay people have way more STDs than straight people" (true btw) "WHAT! THATS HOMOPHOBIC!", "You should really think twice about having kids when youre nearing 50 years old" "THIS IS PATRIARCHY IN ACTION!" are some of the examples of the types of "discussions" the show is presenting now. Its literally strawman after strawman.

The show used to be about teen drama and dumb comedy. I would be willing to simply ignore this stuff and keep watching for the character stuff, like I did in the previous seasons, but even the character writing has gone down a lot. They keep teasing this fucking romance between the main kid and the margot robbie looking girl that has been going on forever now, it feels like a Rachel and Ross situation where they are just desperate to make stuff up so they stay apart and the show goes on for longer.

Yeah I just got caught up with the whole show and liked it quite a lot. I don't mind shows with strong politics as long as the storytelling is good. I agree season three seemed lacking compared to the first two.

The parts I liked least was the new headmistress plotline and Eric's actions in Nigeria. I sort of get what they were going for with the new headmaster, like she's supposed to be a white feminist who wins over the students first by promising change and then just reinforces the old rules and then some. In S1 and S2 there was this fantasy to the school that allowed wacky things to happen while still feeling grounded. But she was so unresponsive and horrible to the students it broke that balance. I agree they made her into a straw man, and only vaguely reasoned out her actions in the end with the fertility/school issues. But too late on that.

And with Eric, oh my goodness. The scenes in Africa were like a horror movie. I kept on expecting him to get bodied (which sort of happened in season 1 with the Hedwig outfit) and the risks he took were insane. Completely unbelievable.

I also agree the Maeve story is getting old. However the relationship with Joan and Jakob, Adam's family, and the alien girl kept me happily watching the show. Adam is a stand-out character but I hope the writers stop using him as a punching bag. It's made him incredibly sympathetic up to this point but there's a limit. Maybe in season four they'll find a way to keep the energy up and to tone down on the preachiness but I'm skeptical it will.

Edit: Oh also one of the weirdest things with season 3 was that all the black character were in a bubble and didn't seem to interact with any of the other kids. It was so weird - the show makes a point to use actors of different races but all of the plot lines with like Jackson, Viv, and the NB girl only involved themselves and the white headmaster oppressing them (lol). Did the writers get scared after BLM or something? Season 1 and 2 were so much better with this.

I was happy to see them finally doing something with Headmester Groff after he spent the entirety of S2 as the big bad rules man, but they took too long to get somewhere. Jason Isaacs is wasted as the mean brother and the fact that by the end him and his wife are still separated and he hasnt even talked to Adam felt like a way to stretch things for more seasons. Alien girl's plot was dumb, she was always a sex weirdo and only now bullying is getting to her?

I agree, all the black characters got the shaft this season. They butchered my boy Jackson by having him being dragged around by the enby chick, all of her character stuff is to say "Im non binary they/them opressed lemme use a third bathroom", and because of that Jackson gets shit all to do. The fat chick gets Uncle Tom-minized and all the boyfriend stuff is simply there so they can have a "funny" roleplay scene in the last episode.

Overall, quite a noticeable dip in quality between S2 and S3, they should really focus on writing a good season and wrapping it up next year, dont see how much further these plotlines can go on without getting stale and terrible.

Yeah Viv and Jackson's friendship was a real highlight of season 2. I liked how their personalities/struggles shined beyond their race and stereotypes (overachieving nerd and under pressure jock). Honestly Jackson's arc was so well resolved in S2 I'm kind of sad they bothered giving him a focus in S3 just for a dead-on-arrival romance with the NB girl.

The NB plotline was also strange. It almost worked. I found it interesting that the two NB characters were primarily uncomfortable with their bodies, with little mention of them seeing themselves as "outside of the spectrum" other than the pronouns. The thing is teen girls being uncomfortable with their bodies/breasts isn't new - their coping mechanism of calling themselves not male or female is. I was hoping either of the NB girls would talk to Otis or his mom to dig in deeper to why they feel this way, because it almost felt like they could have resolved their discomfort. But I guess I'm looking at it from the perspective of being skeptical about adding new genders. I do think the scene showing the girl painfully binding her breasts worked and I understood her pain, I would just come to a different conclusion than the show ("lol just get a binder that actually fits").

this show looks like the most bugman shit in existence. I imagine the people who watch this show also collect artisanal jams and have those Key Worker Funko-pop toys.
