Because for some reason, you have people that think serial killers and shooters (since the Columbine guys are mentioned along with Holmes) are hot and sexy, nevermind the fact these sort of people have killed others for reasons that are literally reprehensible.

Most serial killer "fans" are just being edgelords. However, you have those who actually do idolize them, or the crazies who want to marry them (and sometimes actually do marry them). And then there are those who actually want to imitate their crimes (who sometimes actually do imitate their crimes).
Fascination with serial killers is pretty common and is the reason true crime is one of the most popular nonfiction genres.

Fascination with serial killers is one thing. Kind of like our fascination with lolcows. I even went through a phase like that. But idolizing them and wanting to be like them is a whole kettle of fucked up.

I knew this kid in high school who obsessed over spree-killers and mass-murderers. Any time there was one in the news, he'd yap for weeks on end about how "awesome" the killer was (unless they didn't kill very many people; then they were incompetent, or stupid, or whatever). I don't know what happened to him after high school, but from what little I did find out, apparently he had a huge mental breakdown and had to be heavily medicated. That was last year, whether he's gotten better or worse since then, I can't say.

Two killers that I enjoy are Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo. Their nickname is the Ken and Barbie killers. Paul was known as the Scarborough rapist but no one ever died until he met Karla.
As an pre wedding present, Karla drugged her 15 year old sister and both people raped her while they videotaped everything. Unfortunately she aspirated vomit and died. That death was like pulling out the cork, and they later kidnapped, raped, and murdered two more teen girls.
Karla is on the streets because of a controversial sweetheart deal where she testified against her husband.

Those that want to imitate their crimes should be watched closely, but they're really hard to distinguish from the edgelords unless they do something to signal they're going to do more than just talk, which is very hard to spot.

This phenomena is so well known it even has a name and a Wikipedia article: Hybristophilia. It's nothing new, unfortunately. One of the best-known examples is Ted Bundy. Despite raping and murdering an estimated 30-36+ young women and girls, all between the ages of 15-25 (these are only the murders he was convicted of; he could have committed many more), he still had scores of fangirls after he was arrested and convicted. That's right, these girls were still infatuated with him even though he would fucking murder them if given the chance.

Ever girl who gets infatuated with a serial killer thinks she'd be the exception to his murderous impulses, even if she fits the killer's victim profile. It's a form of special snowflake syndrome. "I'm so wonderful, even a murderer wouldn't want to hurt me!"

I can understand having an interest in true crime and regularly watching crime documentaries, since having an interest in it can lead to someone going to college to pursue a career within the criminal justice field.
However, this glorification of serial killers is going too far. Serial killers are not the unfortunate victims of bad childhoods, they chosen to kill their victims and spent years fantasizing about that one encounter, especially lust-driven serial killers like Dahmer and Gacy. I don't see anything cutesy about it and serial killers especially should not be admired.

You bring up a good point. Personally, I love true crime. I have a ton of true crime books, read lots of articles, and watch tons of documentaries. Serial killers in particular are fascinating and I like picking their brains apart to see what drove them to what they did. I'm not looking for excuses, just explanations.
As long as you maintain a mindset of "these are bad people who did bad things," you're okay. It's pretty normal to want to learn about people so abnormal. But you always need to remember that these are not admirable people, nor are they misunderstood. Any sympathy they may have garnered went out the window when they started hurting innocent people. Plus, serial killers kill people in ways (they're often very methodical and rarely commit crimes of passion) and for reasons (for money, for sexual gratification, for thrills, just 'cause, etc) that can never be justified.
