I know the mods don't want new subforums but since it's not a cow forum I thought I'd suggest it. There are a lot of people here who are scientists or studying science or otherwise into STEM. This occasionally crops up in random threads and it's always an interesting discussion. I think there's a lot to learn from these users and such a board would be informative and enriching with the potential to get insight on science & tech news from people actually in those fields.
Right now, most of the non-lolcow subforums are art and entertainment based. Games, music, art and literature. Events and News is really more for breaking news, world events, celebrity and political stuff. Posting the latest scientific discovery or discussing the newest iPhone doesn't really fit more than on occasion. I think a board just for science and tech subjects would get good use and be really informative.
What do you think?

I like this idea. I'd def post in that subforum a lot, if it were to be made.

Art and Literature have a broader appeal than Science and Technology, so that's why I don't think a board like that would be appropriate. This is the perfect use case for a custom usergroup you may create.

People don't like using the groups. On paper groups seem like a great solution to creating outlets for various interests and cliques, but in practice users find the commenting system clunky compared to using forum posts, they don't get a full rate system, and their posts don't get full site-wide visibility. I'd can groups entirely but I think there are two or three brave ones harshing it out who still use their group. More power to them and no sense ruining their fun.

(clears throat) We already sorta have that.

I honestly preferred the Groups system way better when it was more like Null's forum version of 8chan. Where you'd create your own "boards" and they resembled the regular boards on the forum. Here the interface is very offputting and it feels too much like a facebook derivative or something of that nature.

There is an option to make group threads, and I've found them to be pretty effective forms of communication. The main issue is that they don't appear on the radar in the same way that normal threads do, so they're pretty easy to forget about. I think it'd be useful if there was some way for your group to show up on the front page or something, it would make navigating to them more natural. However, I don't know if the software allows for that.

Why are there girls posting in this thread? Are you guys looking for someone to waifu into doing your homework?

I think that if we can solve this problem, we'll see an explosion in the use of groups as a whole.

Actually, I'd say lewd crew is probably best off in a corner. Putting it in a position of prominence would probably get us banned from a lot of workplaces, and it could make large sections of the site NSFW.

That system was broken as fuck.

A custom group mod that isn't trash is on my extended to-do list but only 1) after Next is done, 2) if my crowdfunding idea works.

trust me any board to do with science will descend into spergs posting long textwalls about a subjects nobody else on the forum is interested in
