Scarlett Johansson Sues Disney Over ‘Black Widow’ Streaming Release

Scarlett Johansson, star of the latest Marvel movie “Black Widow,” filed a lawsuit Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court against Disney, alleging her contract was breached when the media giant released the film on its Disney+ streaming service at the same time as its theatrical debut.

Ms. Johansson said in the suit that her agreement with Disney’s Marvel Entertainment guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release, and her salary was based in large part on the box-office performance of the film.

“Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel,” the suit said.

Disney couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.

I don't even like Disney. To be more accurate I hate most everything they do as a company.
But she deserves this for banking entirely on box office performance in an age where they were already beginning to push for streaming theatrical releases before WuFlu. You'd think someone who has been playing capeshit for over a decade would realize there's plenty of money to be made in a major contract like playing fucking Black Widow.
Even more than that you would think as an actor who has presumably been conscious in the last decade, she'd realize Disney now owns a vast chunk of the entertainment industry. Biting the hand of the people who are literally feeding you doesn't tend to be a good strategy.

Not to mention her character is already dead, and by doing this they have no reason to bring her back

Considering she was one of two people on the Disney/Marvel side of things that acted like an actual adult during the controversy when Martin Scorsese said Marvel movies "weren't cinema," I think her future prospects are still pretty good. Capeshit is not the dominant form of entertainment, despite what retards like Bob Chipman desire, and I imagine the whole thing is going to come crashing down in the very near future. Scarlett started her career in smaller, independent films, and I figured that was always where she was going to go back to after Black Widow.

Oh yeah, I couldn't help but feel Black Widow was something added on later, like a favor or something; considering the character died. Marvel fatigue is real, I have no interest in seeing another superhero movie in my lifetime. I'd be happy to see Scarlett go the way of independent productions again, sort of like Radcliff has done after Harry Potter. Actually, I'd be happy if the movie industry as a whole went with more original movies that aren't all formulaic and cash cow grabs. But, I'm just being delusional and 🌈

first time was fine people were excited with change tv for movie being first big release now that mulan.

Let the great Disney Shekel War commence.

I predicted this paint-by-numbers capeshit was going to pull $450-$500 million just on Marvel inertia. I'm guessing ScarJo's agent has a clearer picture that this movie will be profitable and wants his percentage.

As of Tuesday, Black Widow has drawn $318 million worldwide in two-and-a-half weeks. Capeshit usually gets 25-40 weeks in the theatres.
 
100% she's doing this because she has already been written out of the MCU. Plus, she has hit the age where women age out of roles in modern Hollywood until they hit thier late 50's-60's.

It's a good test case for actors who got screwed by the same day streaming release window. Even if she loses and is blacklisted, she's already a multimillionaire.

Though it's optimistic, it would be nice for the trial to show just how much Disney has established an effective monopoly in a large chunk of the entertainment industry.
 
I wish her the best of luck. She seems like a fairly nice person for a movie star and the movie wasn't bad.

However if we're talking unfairness, I'd love to know how much the stunt dude playing Task Master for 98% of the movie got paid compared to how much the actress who played Taskmaster without the mask on for 2 minutes and one line got paid.

This movie was made at least a year before Covid was even a thing. The contracts were surely signed long before that. It's been delayed for over a year now.

I guarantee she didn't expect Covid.

Considering I hadn't heard of Olga Kurylenko since Quantum of Solace, and she wasn't used at all in the marketing, she probably wasn't paid that much more.
 
The Mouse has been getting pretty arrogant lately. I hope they get their shit pushed in on this lawsuit too.

Between not paying people for reprinting their books, stealing IP, and flat out lying about profits, they're being skullfucked in court.

"You see, your Honor, when we purchased everything about the company, we only purchased the ASSETS, not the debts or contracts that go with those assets. Also, this actor had a contract to perform in this asset and we want him to honor it anyway."
 
They've already released a couple movies via streaming and no one made big waves then, so guessing Disney has made sure they're in the clear here. Scarlet has no reason to avoid making a fuss about this since her character is dead and this movie was apparently mediocre, she's out of the MCU and may as well see if making a stink gets Disney to write a bigger check.
 
I don't care who wins in this war, it's just fun to watch. Disney sucks for monopolizing everything, and ScarJo has the face and acting chops of a rock. Let them both flame out for all I care.
