I’ve since resolved to only shopping brick and mortar too (when not shopping vintage) but on the topic of Etsy, I’ve noticed that it too has become overrun with dropshippers and it’s so annoying!
buying clothes off of etsy is such a goddamn gamble now. even if the seller isn't peddling a dropshipper scam, you still might waste money on something that'll wear down in months, if not weeks, because most clothing is cheap dogshit by default anyways. like, the penpal shirt i got in 2014 is holding up a lot better than the owl hoodie i got a year ago, which was already starting to fade after the first couple washes.
it's good that buying things secondhand isn't seen as a sign of being poor, dirty, and trashy like it used to, but at the same time, we now have thrift stores and antique shops practically becoming gentrified to capitalize on upper-middle class yuppies searching for their next cute vintage find. i remember this becoming an issue way back when macklemore's "thrift shop" was released and it hasn't abated since -- combine that with these places also getting inundated with more and more dropshipper crap (sometimes from those same yuppies) and it feels like it's getting harder to find half decent clothes anywhere.
I've dedintely bedn trying to change my habits here. No longer buy anything over 50% synthetic and try to buy all natural if possible. Also only shop in-person with the exception of a few fandom t-shirts.
Old Navy has been an unexpected goldmine for 100% cotton clothes that are not too expensive. Got a thick cotton sweater on sale for 40$.
Are there any good custom clothing companies? Got the design and everything but i don't really feel like spending 2 bucks for some chink kid to make it or paying 40 bucks locally to just end up getting the 2 bucks chinese garbage
I get 90% of my clothes from sites like depop, eBay and ThreadUp. If the listing looks sketchy, I won’t take a chance on it. I’d rather get used clothes from familiar brands than get ripped off by Cider or Temu or whatever.

This 1000%. Temu and other cheap Chinese garbage sites are a literal cancers on the planet. Even taobao.
I was shopping MUJI for a while because they have a lot of cotton clothings that are decent quality. Of Japanese origin. If you can afford it , I recommend. They have brick and mortar stores in NYC, Seoul, and in Japan.
Another sometimes overlooked point of fast fashion, especially that from China, is that it often contains shit like lead. Even US clothing brands that don’t manufacture overseas use PFAS (endocrine disruptor) and AZO dyes (carcinogen).

In the last decade I've bought a jumper from a charity shop, two pairs of nice trousers from TK Maxx, and a pair of more supportive walking boots after finding out I walk funny. Temu, definitely. Also light-in-the-box was dodgy for me.

Not from TEMU but a package of socks that smelled like pickle juice. I looked it up and supposedly it was some formaldehyde resin they spray on clothes to prevent them from wrinkling during shipping. Being a thrift vet, I wash everything I bring into my house that I intend to wear or eat off of even if brand new but it took a few cycles to get that smell out.
