Salon, the struggling digital publisher, is having trouble paying its rent.

A landlord who late last year evicted Salon from its New York offices for nonpayment of $90,000 in back rent is now trying to force the digital publisher to pay more than $700,000 for the unused portion of a five-year lease that is slated to run through September 2019.

Salon had been paying over $300,000 a year to Vbgo Penn Plaza for offices at 31 Penn Plaza, near Madison Square Garden.

By the fall of 2016, according to a suit filed recently in Manhattan state court, Salon had already fallen behind in its rent covering the period from July 2016 to Sept. 30, to the tune of $90,565. Vbgo said it evicted Salon in December and now is trying to get the struggling Web media company to pay up for the rest of the lease.

Salon, which has since set up New York offices elsewhere in Manhattan, declined to comment.

Very well put, I've found that businesses that base themselves solely on a location that doesn't 100% genuinely need it (news stands, restaurants and "event" locations) tend to be the ones that are more style over substance especially for large office based companies, they are also the ones that are the least successful in return for floor space cost.

Publishing especially digital publishing lends it's self to teleworking, this isn't 20 year's ago when layouts were made on layout paper and you had to stand there and look at it you can have the files on a a share and let people look at them and do group voice chat, email etc and have the same result, hell it's faster in most cases as you don't have to get everyone together at the same time you can just fire off a email an say Guy's the images for XYZ are ready can you take a look and check them over before we publish,etc, etc, etc.

The ones that are new to the market that specifically look for a prestige location like Salon are the ones normally light in content and big on appearance, hell lot's of the older publications like newspapers are seeing there legacy locations as a way to survive and are breaking them larger offices down into smaller units and renting them out to give them a fresh income stream.
