S.F. Muni approves $212 million technology to replace floppy disks

San Francisco transportation officials moved a step closer this week to modernizing the train control system that runs the Muni Metro system, eventually ridding it of a system that uses outdated technology and runs on floppy disks.

The Municipal Transportation Agency board on Tuesday approved a $212 million contract with Hitachi Rail for an up-to-date train control system that will replace the existing system, which was installed in the Market Street subway in 1998.

The contract is part of a $700 million project to transform the Muni Metro's control system.

The software that runs the system is stored on floppy disks that are loaded each morning and an outdated type of communication using wire loops that are easily disrupted. It was expected to last for 20 to 25 years, according to Muni officials. It moves data more slowly than a wireless modem, they said.

By late 2027 and into 2028, a new communications-based system, which employs Wi-Fi and cell signals to precisely track the locations of trains, will be installed by Hitachi, which will provide support services for 20 years under the agreement.

The new technology purchase still needs to be approved by the Board of Supervisors.

While the current train control system operates only on the Market Street subway and Central Subway, the new system will control Metro light rail trains on the system’s surface lines as well.

The Hitachi system is said to be five generations ahead of the current system, said Muni director Julie Kirschbaum, who described it as the best train control system on the market.

which, naturally, means that a fix has only been lined up right at the tail-end of the 26th year.
Weren't floppy disks already outdated by 1998?
 
If stuff is reliable it sticks around forever. I'm in a pretty high tech industry and the amount of stuff I have that relies on Windows NT4 and even NT3.11 is pretty incredible, and it's all had nearly 100% uptime for 25 years, and the only reason for the downtime at that point was Y2K patching.

Finally upgrading, not because the system is that bad, but because after 20+ years of zero manufacturer support the world is running out of the parts that wear out and we are going to have to start cannibalizing working machines.

It's like working in a machine shop where everyone's favorite lathe is one that was built in the 1940s and no matter how much you abuse it, it always works, and if it does go down everyone knows how to fix it - usually just by hitting it with a hammer in the right spot.

yeah I tend to run my gizmos into the fucking ground as long as possible
the hassle of making the new thing work is rarely worth the trouble of replacing the old thing until the old thing is literally about to catch fire

Until very recently our nuclear weapons technology still functioned on floppy discs

All they really need to do is image the disks onto flash drives and replace the floppy drives with Goteks.

Hitachi Rail manufactures this stuff in the US, oddly enough.
 
How the fuck does this cost $212mil?

Is it $2mil for the train control system and $210mil in political corruption funds stolen from the tax base to spread around to every corrupt politician and refill the "whores & yayo" fund at city hall?

It would probably be well less than $212mil to develop a next-gen train control system from scratch.

There's a reason the part of the Bay Area that had any kind of technological innovation was and is located about 40 minutes south of the city proper.
