Think on the other-hand to something like One Piece which decided it was going to go overboard with creative powers, and actually ended up using them. Or even early manga Fairy Tail which had solved both the pace of fights issue and creative power issue (manga, because the anime is notoriously bad at pacing and tropes).
You have me at a disadvantage as I've not seen either but are the fights like rwby or are they paced to have moments of dialogue and power ups?
They have a mixture of both. One Piece fights (ignoring fighting grunts) tend to be on a much longer length than RWBY, which is why I included Manga Fairy Tail which as opposed to its Anime counterpart does not have this issue
That's fair. I think for as far as its theme and power level rwby does fairly well with how semblances work. I'm not against more spectacular fights but it would feel weird if things got to the level of buggy from one piece for example ( I've only seen the live action so I imagine the manga takes it to 100).
The Semblances work in a fight fine, yeah, but in general not only do they kinda feel a bit basic, they end up working against the individuality motif. I mean, I didn't notice that while watching the show, so I guess they did something right, but I did notice it on retrospection.
I would argue it's better then the alternative. While I enjoy dragon ball I wouldn't want rwby to turn into everyone screaming their semblance attack.

I don't really think that would work given how most people have their aura locked ( I think it attracts grim...but that might be my head cannon).
Emotions attract Grimm (and pre-Vol4, also things like noise and smell, but they retconned it out post Volume 3, and later retconned it in via Roman Holiday after Volume 8)

It's not exactly silly, it was a very useful semblance, though, it was one of the rare unique ones. I mean, I'm not contending that there aren't unique ones, I'm contending that the lore is full of duplicates.
Fair. I think you are referring more to something like hero no academia vigilantes. I think them deciding early on that only a few people would have semblances stopped that.

It's a fair point. I think I enjoy the setting and the characters more then the actual plot of the show. Part of me hopes it gets picked up by competent writers who realize the funny hijinks of torchwick are infinitely better then cinders brooding nothing burgers.
I mean, that's the benefit of creating a power system that is incredibly malleable without coming off as just being a list of exceptions. Miles and Kerry will forever be trapped as talentless hacks imitating more talented people.
Kerry has nice ideas if they are first ran through and, uh, visualized by an actual writer. Roman Holiday has him credited (alongside Eddy Rivas) for the "story", but it appears to be written by E.C. Myers, who while not having a very extensive writing history (slightly less than half of his literary history are RWBY novels), managed to make Kerry's ideas into a very nice story
They, like a lot of what has been previously established by the early volumes, were clearly treated more like problems for the narrative to ignore rather than opportunities for creative action and storytelling. The fact that Ironwood's semblance was non-existent (saying it is basically just autistic hyper fixation at a con doesn't count) was criminal.
Volume 8 has them overcome an obstacle that only Ruby could by basically absorbing everyone else. I'd say her semblance is one of the better showcases, and I kind of wish the 'speed' element was dropped entirely for rose petal shenanigans.
This was especially retarded because Weiss's glyphs were a much better and more unique power that nobody else used anyway. It should have just been her semblance.
Yes. Like I later clarified, it was useful exactly once. And that once usefulness initself was fucked, by not even having the decency to give Ruby the ability to figure out how her Semblance works.
