Using reality as inspiration for writing is difficult because you'd get called a hack allergic to subtly if you portray people and events as they truly are. Even if she did, the Anglican Church (and I count the Scottish Episcopal Church as the same entity) is one of the most milquetoast ones, and I do mean it.
It had female priests in both England and Scotland as soon as 1994. They even made a TV series about it, it's a decent comedy series about a woman in a search of a dick:
The SEC clergy can even enter same-sex civil partnerships since 2005, and since 2015, the SEC even blesses same-sex couples.
Being a member of most Anglican Church branches is a tiny step from being non-religious at all.
