Not always. I ride bicycles a lot. Don't do it near as much now because I live in a hilly hellhole where I have to climb a mountain just to get out of my own apartment complex, but back in the day I could cross my older, better town on a bicycle faster than in a car, because the bicycle can take opportunities cars can't to go through places a car can't go (walking trails, for example), isn't trapped in traffic, can go on sidewalks (obviously you don't ride in people's way, but if you're not in NYC there's not that much foot traffic), and so on.

You can also ride the bicycle right up to your destination. At the moment when I commute to work, it's a half hour whether driving or bicycling, because if I drive I have to park in the piece of shit parking lot fifteen minutes away at the bottom of a huge fuck-off hill.
