I'd bet if Zaid contributed anything whatsoever to this motion, it was the nonsensical, irrelevant tirades about Meyer that had nothing to do with jurisdiction, since Zaid apparently is completely oblivious as to what the case is even about. If not, he's not said a single word that betrays any knowledge of what is even in the case, and what he has said is actively harmful to his client's case.

Oh it’s not “if anything”. Those texts clearly show that Waid fully understood what it was that he was doing, and that he further sought to influence the parties once he realized he was in legal jeopardy. There is no other possible interpretation.

And these statements being out there can quickly become a major problem for Waid if he attempts anymore crowdfunding. Much of his prior round came from comic pros who if word is to be believed, were encouraged to donate by one or more major “vice principles” at Marvel and DC. But given these statements and actions from Waid, the Mouse legal team will likely step in and say “no more”. Nothing that can be traced back to them. All it takes is one contract peon to declare “my editor told me I had to donate” to drag the mouse into an FTC issue. One in which complaints were already filed. No matter how you slice it Waid is bad optics.

Considering the state of the physical/mainstream comics industry, Marvel IP is the only thing of value to Disney. I think they keep it around for propaganda value, but propaganda that never leaves the store shelves has no value. And the staff have no value.

If you look at the history of Marvel in the comics over the past 2 decades, it can be traced to the marketing department being in charge, a decision by Perlmutter to push sales (look to the Clone Saga of Spider-Man). Marketing departments are still trying to understand online behavior, and they are looking at Tumblr posts and responses because it gets the most exposure, so it must be the right direction.

And to think that Marvel Publishing would tank sales just to spite someone, look no further to the treatment the X-books have been getting for 15 years; this is editorial push coming from Perlmutter because he was pissed that the Fox wouldn't give him back the movie rights when they turned out to be worth something. It's also why the Fantastic Four was killed the summer before Fant4stic came out; in the hopes of tanking movie ticket sales.

Yes, I am an old-era comic book dork. That said, you can really see where this begins, with the end of the Jim Shooter era at Marvel, and the beginning of the Toy Biz era (the toy company Perlmutter owns and the reason he bought the Marvel). The push moved heavily over into spectacle and aping whatever was popular on TV and movies. They even took a case to the Supreme Court (Toy Biz V United States) to prove that Mutants weren't Human to reduce the tariff they paid on the toys.

Because here’s the core truth that nobody quite understands. The House of Mouse does not want to be a publishing house. This is a long-standing not simply policy but corporate philosophy. They have in the past shut down numerous publishing arms. This is why Lucasarts got shuttered so rapidly and game publishing outsourced. Publishing is not worth Disney’s time or effort. They get better returns outsourcing it and letting somebody else herd the autists. But they have a problem with Marvel. They bought it for the IP, studio and merchandising. But it’s left them stuck with this bloody comic publisher that they really don’t want, but getting rid of it would be incredibly bad PR. So they leave Ike alone up in New York, so long as he doesn’t lose too much money or they don’t bring too much bad press. (Nerd revolts don’t count! Nobody important cares about the whiny comic book nerds.) If the comic clowns are actively driving off consumers and killing the network of retailers? Better! It just hastens the day Disney can shitcan the lot of them.

GoFundMe is not going to make such a call regarding a matter under litigation. They’ve found a nice niche funneling money to lawyers. The lawyers like it, and thus don’t bother them. They won’t mess with it and will happily sell arms to both sides in civil litigation.

JSG's Gollum expression of Waid is spot on, fits the fucker like a glove. Waid actually sounds like some villain from a shitty Saturday morning cartoon show, this is reaching Chris-Chan levels of absurdity. Kinda makes me glad I never cared for his work anyways, I can only imagine how shitty it must be for an aspiring young writer who loves his work to realize what a wretched little creature he truly is.
