Speaking of N64, I managed to get my hands on a repro cart of that unreleased Viewpoint 2064 game I mentioned before. It’s surprisingly really good and basically around 99-100% complete (at least, the version I have). Don’t know why it was cancelled tbh. Publisher issues, maybe?

It took so long to develop that the license expired, and SNK's bankruptcy meant that the dev couldn't negotiate a renewal.

Don't buy repro carts. The scumbags selling them are assholes. Buy a flashcard and download all the prototypes, fan-translations and nigger hacks without clogging your house with plastic.

I am not a fan of repro carts either as many are really cheaply made, but I also don’t care much for flashcards personally. I only make an exception for repros when it comes to prototypes and ROM hacks. For games that officially released, I always try to get an OEM copy.

SNK? Did they have anything to do with this one? I know the original Viewpoint was released on their Neo Geo system, but I haven’t seen anything saying that they had involvement with the N64 sequel. Is there something I’m missing?

SNK owned the IP as they did pretty much 99% of NeoGeo games, because they were the publisher. Of the companies that published their own games on NeoGeo, if I recall correctly SNK ended up buying them all up anyway, so if a game was on NeoGeo first, it was basically guaranteed to be SNK property.

As to the repro carts, just don't.

There is no quality control and basically you are buying cheap Chinese-made carts that can, and fairly often do, cause damage to hardware.

Flash carts are made with a lot more care, unless you are buying some Temu knockoff, but even beyond that it is just straight-up stupid to pay for every repro rather than buy a well-made flash cart once and load it with new things as they pop up. Simple economics.

Ah, I see. Makes sense I guess.

For what it’s worth, the one I have was actually produced in the US and I don’t have any issues with it. What kind of damage can repro carts cause to the hardware?

If they are using recycled PCBs, if the wrong PCB is used you can have shorts or spikes in voltage, which can fry a cartridge slot or a whole system.

If they use new PCBS of poor quality, you can have contacts that aren't the right size, which can again can cause shorts or voltage variances, or the PCB can just be the wrong thickness and ruin the slot.

The PCB in the old Pro Action Replay for Saturn was too thick by something like half a milimeter, which may not sound like much, but people had issues with them causing official cartridges like the Memory Backup from SEGA or the cart for King of Fighters '95 that had the background data to be unable to function.

Bootleg NES carts had similar issues, almost everyone I knew who had a friend with a multicart ended up with a NES that could only play that multicart after a while. There can also be issues with the plating on the contacts.

In short, bootleg carts are risky, and unless you know how to fix your hardware, they are a time bomb.

I came across this article that went more in depth on what you were saying. It’s a pretty interesting read.

They went from about the same hit rate as Acclaim in the 8-bit days to almost 50\50 in the PS2 era, but by then their rep was so shitty in Japan that they decided to kill the brand since Bandai had bought full ownership in Banpresto sometime during the PS1 era.
On the subject of Acclaim and LJN, apparently, it was owned by MCA before 1990 (so the Back to the Future game was created during the time when they were under the same umbrella as Universal Pictures). Apparently LJN was a money-loser (but the revenue it was making, 75% came from video games) so when it was sold to Acclaim in 1990, Acclaim killed the toy side of the company, yet still published games under both names.

It seems that Acclaim was the publisher for what was deemed the "better" games, so the Simpsons NES games were done under the Acclaim name.
Acclaim and LJN merged in 1990. By that time the video game part of the company made up 75% of the company's revenue, with Acclaim pulling the plug on the toy side. Around the time they closed LJN for good, Acclaim bought Valiant Comics, which gave them the Turok IP.

Also on the emulation aspect, I realize how out of date some of my emulators are. Gotta upgrade from Mupen64plus...Gopher64 looks the most solid.

Can any one recommend me Saturn games worth playing? Exclusive, in English or don't need to read (beat 'em ups with minimal story). Which retro arch core should I use? I don't want to fuck around with stand alone emulators.

I know Die hard arcade, Daytona USA, Fighting vipers are all great. And it has all the fighting games ever.

For arcade ports you'll probably be better off playing the arcade version in almost every case

Bug! and Bug Too!
Clockwork Knight 1 and 2
Rayman
Nights Into Dreams
Megaman 8 (has slightly more content than the PS1 version and the songs are subtly mixed differently)
WipEout

Also I don''t use retroarch, I use Mednafen with Mednafee as a frontend

It's kind of uneven and peculiar, but it's a great, unusual racing game with a soundtrack by Jesper Kyd.

There was also a Win/DOS release, but that's harder to get working.

Clockwork Knight 2. It includes the first game as a bonus, and is a cool Japanese platformer.

Sega Rally Championship, Nights into Dreams, Mechwarrior 2, Impact Racing.

SRC is an arcade port that has relatively good (for 1995) dirt and tarmac physics and is just a solid rally game all-around. Nights into Dreams is an odd game that involves you flying around scrolling 3d levels with occasional boss fights. It was made by Sonic Team and shares some similar elements and game feel to the Sonic games. MW2 was only ported to one other console, the PSX. Having played both, I slightly prefer the Saturn port. It's a mech combat game focused more on the piloting aspect, themed in the Battletech universe around the conflict between two Clan factions. That's the simplified version without getting too into the weeds of autistic tabletop robot wargaming lore. The "story" here is mainly just set dressing and to serve as a way to bridge the narrative between missions. Impact Racing is a combat racing game that I enjoyed playing a lot as a kid, but apparently wasn't well-received. Really just a personal nostalgia preference here, you may think it's shit.

I think Saturn might of had one of the best ports of NBA Jam. There's also the Saturn version of Symphony of the Night
