If I had to make a guess, I can only say it will become more insidious, perhaps of some more innate, integral social engineering in a way that you won't know an ad is a ad, at least if you aren't savvy to such things in the first place.
if ads pretended to be innocent pieces of entertainment i would hate them less, thats the way some ads were before, there are certain vintage ads i like to go back and rewatch like the nintendo smash ad of iwata and reggie fighting each other, its advertising a product but it isnt obnoxious

it still kind of exist in the form of neocities

There was an ad company that displayed ads on your desktop and you'd get a check every month for viewing them. I remember installing some program that moved my mouse every couple minutes so it wouldn't time out and stop paying me. That was probably around 98-2000ish
That was AllAdvantage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AllAdvantage Archive.org's old captures for it don't work anymore.

Ah, it's just not the same. Neocities is full of trannies, not regular people looking to put whatever info they know about whatever subject they like online. And that was at a time when the internet was gatekept by only being accessible in the first world, by people well off enough to afford a computer and a connection.

Outbound bandwidth can be shockingly expensive and cheap/discounted bandwidth is a huge selling point for servers. Ads are horking down a huge amount of it to pin video ads to the bottom-right of pages with teeny-tiny close buttons, so it's got to be using more electricity than ever. Not so green.

What I'm saying is someone should psyop all the idle eco-retards into splattering tomato soup on ad execs instead of paintings.

It's annoying how any random site I go to is riddled with ads that fill the whole screen and ads that pop up out of nowhere. Any sites that tell you to turn off adblock are salts in the open wound. The internet has become unusable without an ad blocker because of this.

Something even more insidious and infuriating to think about... Most people pay for their internet service, in the way of arbitrary data limits. And every little pop-up, ad, and site redirect is just that much more of your precious monthly limit getting chewed up by corporate drivel shoved in your face unwillingly and against your consent. So not only are you forced to see this shit non-stop, you are in effect  PAYING for it. And on top of that, everyone from the ISP, the advertiser, Jeff Bezos, the paperboy, and your neighbors dog's therapist are packaging up your information and selling it for profit. Again, without your consent* and in most cases without you even knowing about it.

*unfortunately you probably did consent, you ignorant fucking retard! Cant you read?!?!?!. It was on page 643 of the EULA in 6p text that you signed by clicking the little box that you were required to click to use the damn thing you paid for in the first place. All rights reserved, all arbitration will be decided by the corporation, this program is not to be rebroadcast without the express written consent of the NFL. Batteries not included. No refunds. No warranty implied or provided.

My guess is it will be an arms race to the point where you need to have your own AI to filter the shit of hostile AIs. Using the internet "directly" as you and me do right now will be a thing of the past.
Neuromancer wasn't meant to be an instruction manual.

You can never hate trannies enough.
