"Muir and The Master Builder" written and sung by Brian McNeill.
This song contrasts naturalist John Muir's Calvinist upbringing with his naturalism; the "Redwood Cathedral" brings him to see a God completely distinct from the brimstone and damnation he was taught about, a God of an endlessly creative, striving vital force.

I asked the Master Builder
Why did he make John Muir
From the seed of a man, so hard and unforgiving.
A father who tried to use the Gospel to ensure
That his son's life would never be worth living
And the Lord's voice answered on the High Sierra wind
From the mountains where the clear waters lie, saying:
"Hold the bravest heart, above the gravest of sins
And I'll show you how to make a hero rise"

Leave Calvin and the Bible
To the parish o' Dunbar
Give a blind man back his eyes to find
The brightest o' the stars
Then lead him tae the altar of a better God by far
In the vale of the redwood cathedral

I'm not altogether happy about vilifying Calvinism the way McNeill does; I'm actually quite sympathetic to its doctrine. This song is nevertheless an epic, full of rich stunning imageries.

Anyone else listen to "Alternative" religious music ?
Here's some Black Metal/Noise/Dark Ambient Catholic music. It's one of the most dark and extreme music I've ever heard, and at the same time it uses Psalms for lyrics and is coming from a really devoted band.

In a more conventional way, this is the one we sang in my parish choir rehearsals

Brazilian singer Virginia Rodrigues used to be a Catholic, then a Protestant, until she converted to the syncretic Brazilian religion called Candomblé. Her lush and exquisite second album Nós reflects much of the religion's lore.

"Uma História De Ifá" ("The Story of Ifá")
Eligbo, enchanted city
Eleejibgo, its true majesty.

Ara Ketu ritual of the candomblé
Exulting the cities of Ketu and Sabé
He was wounded but he was avenged
The great man used his strength
Hard years have passed
The people have suffered so.
No crops, no livestock
They flourished no more.

Warriors fought among themselves
For hours God fought Evil
Then the King and his warriors
Return to the Sacred Forest
And ate the bread of God
As a communion for all Negro men
