The Irish hymn "Duan Chroí Íosa" was written in the late 18th century, when Irish Catholics were oppressed under the Penal Law imposed by the English.

I had hoped to find the version in Hector Zazou's album Lights in The Dark. That version, accompanied by Japanese koto, Galician bagpipes, and delicate electronics, is quite otherworldly.
As Youtube is trash, I might as well upload it myself.

The koto music used in this piece is the famous Rokudan by Yatsuhashi Kengyo

A lot of Gregorian chants and Orthodox hymns here, but personally I've come to really believe that Anglican hymns are the most beautiful in the world.

There's a more famous cover of this by Johnny Cash with less overtly religious wording, but I much prefer the original for being unapologetically Christian as intended.

Here's the parent song too, sung in its native German.
