Religious Music - It dosen't mater if it's Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, or even Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, Etc..
Probably one of my favorite gospel songs. Johnny cook has an incredible range. He said that when he was 5 his grandmother made him lay in the floor and sing with 5lb bags of flour on his chest.
And if you’re a fan of looking for a city, you have to love the James Canupp version. I assume he’s on the spectrum because he claims in this video to have given Brian Free a “run for his money” while they were onstage together.
Not gonna lie man, Orthodox chants manage to make me tear up and feel something the same way that Islamic nasheeds/ghazals/qawwali does.
Relative to the sterile and artificial church music I've listened to in the USA, the former always just manages to make me feel... something.
I cannot describe what that feeling is, beyond that it exists and that I can feel it most clearly listening to this type of music.
I wish there was more pop music about Christian stuff that didn't suck! The bible is full of amazing scenes and poetry but most popular christian music seems to be some variation of 'God is good and cool ' which gets a bit old tbh. Search results are absolutely dominated by Hillsong too, so actually finding songs is a trial.
I like the emphasis on prayer in songs. In the account of the Transfiguration we hear that Jesus was transfigured when he began to pray. Meanwhile both 'Jesus' and 'the Crucifixion' are essentially prayers in song- the repeating lyrics by the velvet underground ask Jesus for assistance, while Stainer's emphasis on 'help us to pray' in the choral sections underlines that prayer is the heart of a Christian's relationship with God.
