Why can't they just not look at the subs they don't like? Just don't follow them and it's like they don't exist. Problem solved.

They do like the ebil nazi subs though, or else they wouldn't look at them so much. I occasionally peruse r/againsthatesubreddits because they are unwittingly a great aggregator/signal booster for right wing content. They pretend to be scared and hurt by the stuff, but they're not very convincing about it. The performative aggrievement is just their way of convincing themselves and each other that they are actually good people. It's kind of like how prisoners will single out sex criminals to feel better about the fact that they are murderers or robbers or whatever, or how people used to burn "witches" back in the day. Having a communal punching bag has always been useful for creating a sense of unity.
