This is the classic "Look how badass I am" post. His continuous apologizing before immediately treating the other guy like a toddler, his contradictory "We don't have a lot of cougars here but I've seen plenty", and his attempt to make punching a very fast feline predator in the face sound easy.
There was a TV show years and years ago about animals attacking people and one of the stories was a cyclist who was jumped by a cougar on his way to work (a wild forest cat and not a hot older woman, unfortunately for him). The cougar had the cyclist's helmet in its mouth and was trying to drag him into the woods when a trucker came around the bend and saw what was happening, the guy stops his truck and jumps out and lands a solid punch clean on the cougar's head. According to the trucker (and this was a fairly big burly guy mind you) that when he punched that cat it felt like punching a brick wall and the cougar just looked at him like it was annoyed. He had to wail on this thing for a good while before it finally let the cyclist go and fucked off back into the woods. So no, I don't think that punching it in the nose would work any more than it would work on any other animal.
And keep in mind this is assuming that you even see or hear the thing, recognize what it is, and then manage to actually square up to it prior to the thing literally being on top of you with your skull in its jaws. Cougars are sneaky and like most big cats they try to end fights before they begin by crushing the victim's skulls. That cyclist in the story above only survived because the cougar couldn't crush his skull through his bicycle helmet but the cougar's fangs still managed to punch through not only the helmet's plastic shell but also the foam body and padding and managed to actually cut the guy's scalp.
