I don't hate Macaulay Culkin's pet gimp, but as with some other guests, his seat would have simply been better filled by anyone from the RLM crew.

This is sort of a recurrent problem with RLM. Pretty much everyone who isn't Jay or Mike got a round of hate or at least a "Who the fuck are you?" before audiences warmed up to them. Generally this is why I try to keep an open mind whenever they bring new people on.

The problem is that Rich, Mike and Jay have such a good rapport that the fourth person, whomever he or she may be, feels like a disruption. Josh is an absolute tool, but he's actually one of the least disruptive guests since Mike and Rich will often team up to shut him down.

They mentioned somewhere, I believe on that Bunny Ears podcast actually, that they try to warn people to gear up for the evening because its a long haul. You have to sit through three movies and then afterwards film the roundtable discussion which could take a few hours more. This has the disadvantage of everyone being really tired and loopy by the end, so I think the more inexperienced guests fall victim to that.

Also, knowing Mike, I'm sure he deliberately leaves in the most humilating moments he finds. We know he does this with Rich because they'll point it out, but you can see a in a few episodes where someone will say something offensive or stupid and then look really embarassed and worried for a minute. I think this is why Jack sort of deliberately plays this up now and just keeps going whenever he says something offensive.

I am 99.9% certain that was a planned bit where he was the stand-in for Jay's blank disinterest in Star Trek, because Mack was busy beating Mike to the punch. Look at the behind the scenes Mack posted, they're intentionally planning bits for the show:

His "nobody wants a Charlie-in the Box" voice was really annoying too.

I presumed this was an in-joke about Mac being a Star Trek fan as well and his buddy giving him shit for talking about Star Trek too much with other nerds. As a Star Trek fan I can attest this is pretty much exactly how people treat you when you start yarning on about it.

I'm more bothered by the idea of them getting involved with celebrities and star power as time goes on. Well, guesting a lot is not a problem (the Canadians are basically adopted at this point and it didn't change anything), but with Culkin there is always the underlying interest of promoting his own brand and the guy he keeps bringing along gives off the same vibes as those LA circlejerkers that randomly materialize around RL streamers and minor celebrities, but maybe I'm reading too much into it. That said Culkin's funny, they had plenty of opportunities to sell out already and are very self-aware about that kind of stuff, so I'm not worried.

I mean, if you've ever sat down and watch RLM's How Not to Make a Movie documentary (which I reccomend by the way, especially if you're down with a cold or something), its pretty clear that Mike is perfectly willing to be an asshole when someone pushes an idea he doesn't like. I'm pretty sure that, had Mac tried to force anything, Mike would probably have told him to fuck off and I bet Rich wouldn't have been having it either. Jack and Jay seem to be more willing to go with the flow.

Definitely would've preferred Jay or even Jack or Josh as the fourth. Between him getting flustered and annoyed during the discussion of who the antagonist of Roar was and ultimately not choosing Roar as BotW because it made him 'too nervous' (causing Mike to have to try to explain what Best of the Worst actually was), Shawn felt out of place and detrimental to the episode, plus it's not like he really brought anything to it or was particularly funny.

Some of their other guests might not be great but they usually have ties or experience in the industry that lets them occasionally add something interesting to the discussion. Shawn felt like some rando off twitter.
