Really? The very first shot of the movie looks very unnatural because of the color grading. I've never seen a movie shot on film that looked like that.

The bar scene is a dead giveaway - overly dark with strong yellow tint.

Hokum is the definition of mid, these guys are so easy to please if you hit certain tropes. Like when they praised matrix revolutions "meta" aspect even though meta is the laziest thing, or thought luke skywalker fantasizing about murdering his nephew was deep, or says james gunn movies are good.
Admittedly it was by far Damian MCarthy's best film, but that's not saying much. I didn't care for Caveat or Oddity, but Hokum was good (though not great). He might be starting to find his stride especially now that he's getting a higher budget to work with.

It does feel like the bar is so low in the horror genre that all you have to do is make something mediocre and people go nuts for it.
