Oddly enough I was at a book signing and got to ask about that and it's supposedly inspired by this wierd toster that was for sale in a Airport, that spoke to you Red Dwarf is full of stuff like that supposedly the skutters where inspired from a old BBC show called Tomorrows World an some guy who was trying to make a household robot.

It felt like good old Red Dwarf from back in the day. I haven't laughed that hard in a while.
