There's that phrase people (particularly myself) like to bandy about nowadays, ludonarrative dissonance. When the illusion of the game comes apart because your actions don't match the character/plot. And devs choose how much leeway the player is allowed to manage that, ranging from something like old-school GTA with no limits to something like Assassin's Creed or Witcher that doesn't let you lay a hand on "civilians."

GTA and RDR games, I think, deal with it well because even though they may let you go on rampages, there's an understanding that the open world gameplay is not canonical.

But RDR really fucked up its crime system, because it was supposed to be a game about social banditry that:
1) Punished banditry
2) Had no "social" aspect, no opportunity to redistribute the wealth you steal

#1 was a problem because the damn wanted system is busted and unrealistic, there's infinitely respawning lawmen that can magically be ready to intercept you, there's no way to lower the wanted system (AC knew how to do that, tear down bounty posters, intimidate witnesses, shoot specific lawmen, but that doesn't exist in RDR2), and the wanted system is so punishing it quickly makes a place unplayable. So you're given tools with which to play as an outlaw, and then it makes it so unpleasant you never want to, even though the STORY wants you to.

PC mods have fixed that, I haven't played RDR2 on PC yet though.

#2 is debatable, because the fact that Dutch is an empty gasbag is the whole point, but that's not to say Arthur couldn't have had opportunities to throw money around, or that they couldn't have had Dutch be more generous at the start.

The issue with #2 being a thing is that the gang's times of even pretending to be Robin Hoods are long over. Arthur calls Dutch out on his total about-face in that regard during one of the Wapiti missions.

Dan Houser couldn't make his fucking mind up. I mean, we know this based on a little bit of information already (last minute romance removal, unused dialogue showing Eliza being alive in the epilogue, unused dialogue of Arthur in New Austin, Arthur VA talking about how originally his son froze to death in Colter, Guarma being converted from an open area to a linear area, etc), but it really shows in the product that he never had a finalized script and haphazardly changed major story elements throughout development with how characters act so bi polar throughout the game.

It also doesn't help that there's so much damn "choice" in regards to personality with Arthur. You can make him the friendliest fucking cowboy in the world in gameplay, and then the next minute he's a bitter thug in the storyline and vice versa near the end. Having a character that can play the middle ground works with John as he's been away from the gang for years by the time RDR comes out, but Arthur is a wanted man in one of the last major gangs of the wild west.

It honestly makes me wonder just how bad GTA VI was going before Dan left and Rockstar just fucking restarted.

And to be absolutely fair, he could've still been an "honorable" character if he was more like Charles. Meaning, he wasn't the gang's main attack dog, and was just a loner who just stayed with them because they were the only ones who accepted him, and just only killed when he needed to, or when he got insanely triggered by something.

Yeah, gameplay-wise it would still cause problems because of what players naturally do, and how fucked the honor system is, but it would make more sense for what they were trying to do.

Edit: Off-topic, but this month South Korea's video games rating committee rated a version of RDR1 that's separate from its Xbox 360, and PS3 ones.

Considering something similar happened with the GTA Definitive Edition trilogy, a port/remaster/remake of RDR1, and Undead Nightmare could actually be happening.

If true, perhaps they're remaking the original using RDR2's foundation. Insider information said that the RDR remaster was "paused." I hope they'd use that opportunity to give some life to Red Dead Online.

I've started playing it, so much potential in its open world, setting, and mechanics that is begging to be expanded upon. The 2XP, gold events are great opportunities for new players to get their feet wet, if they get invested into it.

I JUST realized something. If/when R* does remake RDR (I'm convinced of the remake territory since the rating board mentions gore), expect R* to delist the original RDR from marketplaces.

IIRC they were delisted already
You can still buy RDR on the Xbox marketplace. I cannot find it on the PSN store; I know R* removed RDR from PSNow.

I do not like the hunting mechanic in RDR2. Some animals are "poor" as soon as they appear. Even when you shoot them with the right weapon, the quality decreases for no foreseen reason.

Red Dead Online has a new monthly event active till August 1st involving the Naturalist Role.

Doesn't the Naturalist role punish you for harming animals, even if accidental? Meanwhile, GTA Online gets a massive update involving fighter jets.

That reminds me, how DO you dual wield revolvers in RDR2? Do you have to buy another holster? At this point, she's practically a collector finding knick knacks for Nazar.

How is the Bounty Hunter role?
Yes, I think you buy another holster, but you need to unlock the ability in RDO. Bounty Hunter is okay, it's basically take poster, go to location, capture or kill guy, bring back. There's some others that span multiple hunts, but are pretty much the same thing I think. They should unlock a final mission when you get most of them or something, been awhile since I played.

Well, that's stupid. Of course, I've been farming Capitale for the Blood Money missions. Why is there another currency, I'll never understand that. On the subject of RDO, it's the friendliest community I've met yet. Grieving is uncommon

Used to be more common, but more people left.

Just started Red Dead Redemption 2's single player. Onto Chapter 2 now. I hope the rest of the game isn't like Chapter 1. It's quite linear in every sense. I remember Red Dead Redemption being less restrictive in establishing its world, even in its beginning. One mission I'm driving a wagon, RDR2 decides to control my speed mid path.
