As an American, I do cook a version of poutine, although I don't know where to get good cheese curds, so I resort to sliced cheese. Sometimes I sub out the potatoes for zucchini and use a light gravy

My two favorites are green-tomato cobbler (self explanatory) from deep in the Bible Belt; and pfilza, a Volga German sweet bread-stuffing from my grandmother & great-grandmother.

The cobbler is easy to find recepies for; but the pfilza, not so much. No worries though, it's super simple.

Break stale bread into chunks; add to a crockpot, 2 cans drained apricots, 1 lb raisins, 1 stick of butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp nutmeg, heat on low. Add cream to keep stuffing moist but not soggy; more butter may also be needed depending on how stale & thick your bread is. Stir, don't let it stick. Serve when raisins are plumped & firm.

Or better yet, stuff it inside a bird; works great for duck, just go easy on the butter. They didn't have much to make sweets with on holidays back then; but they always had bread, raisins, and apricots, plus it's a great use for stale bread.

Fun story, fam member moves out west, comes home for holidays, goes to local meat market, picks up this special beef (u have to ask specifically for the beef for raw beef Sammies, they keep it separate and not under the window). She puts it on a roll, freezes them, takes them home on a plane in her carryon (yes this was yrs ago), and at work at the office next day she pulls out one of these sandwiches and eats it for lunch, horrifying her officemates who have never heard of such a thing as a raw beef sandwich.

I would recommend these at lesser formal functions, they are a form of "heavy Hors d'oeuvre" and can keep guests satisfied for quite some time while the main dish is being plated in kitchen or so on.
